The history of organized labor reflects the cultural, often radical, values of the working class at a particular place and time. Participants will interact with a selection of books and magazines focused on trade unionism. Among the rare pieces that will be shared is a script for the stage play "In Union There Is Strength", written by Irwin Swerdlow and based on the article "Who Should Organize Women?" by Fannia M. Cohn. Join us on Saturday, May 9th as we explore the rare collection of labor history at the Free Library.

Take history in the palm of your hand: turn pages, hold manuscripts, and handle artifacts with the Hands-on History series from the Free Library #39;s Special Collections. Curiosity seekers of all ages are welcome!

Attendance is free, but reservations are suggested. Click here to get your free tickets!

This workshop is now POSTPONED to FALL 2020 .

Starting with the classic map fold, we will build a variety of book or zine structures. Bring your prints, drawings, altered pages, or decorative papers to combine into stars, extend into chains, or create pop-up elements. Pages can be nested and combined with found objects for sculptural effects. Options for covers and closures will be presented. No previous book art experience is required.

Claire Marcus has a special interest in landscape's power to evoke memory and narrative. Her work in book formats and mixed media is created with printmaking and drawing, stitched with found objects. Increasingly sculptural in form, it reflects her background as a fifth generation fiber artist, synthesizing family heritage with training in painting and architecture. Marcus holds MFA and BFA degrees in painting and a BA in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied with Neil Welliver and Rudy Burckhardt. Rackstraw Downes supervised her teaching fellowship. She has conducted standards-based, preschool- 20 residencies and community arts projects for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts since 1998, working with a range of populations including adjudicated youth and adults.

This free workshop will take place 10 AM - 1 PM in the Art Department of the Parkway Central Library. Materials will be provided, but participants may bring their own tools.

The Art Department partners with the Philadelphia Center for the Book to bring free book arts workshops to Parkway Central from September to May. Space in these very popular classes is limited; please let us know in advance if you will not be able to attend after you have registered so that we can release tickets to those on the waiting list

Registration is required and will open at a date in FALL 2020 to be determined by the instructor from:

This class will hold the space for you to relax, integrate, and rest deep within yourself. Beginners at yoga as well as those who have yoga experience are welcome. The class will begin with breath and centering exercises to move into mindfulness and to draw the senses inward. We #39;ll practice balanced Classical Yoga postures that focus on finding gentle mobility and core strength. The process will be invigorating and calming for the body, mind, and spirit. Modifying and adapting poses using chairs and other props will make the practice adaptable and gentle.

Yoga Instructor: Christina Gesualdi

I am a Philly-based yoga teacher, dancer, and choreographer. I make experiential dance work that researches a certain softness and imaginative off-ness in the body. I am in love with the way Yoga as an experiential study, makes space for pluralism, subtlety, (and to use poet C.A. Conrad #39;s title) "deviant propulsion" of the self. I have taught Yoga for over 12 years. I am grateful for over 400hrs of Yoga teacher training and have been a curious student under Marie Ireola, Nicole Bindler, and Dawn Smelser at Motherheart for teacher training and the Inner Journey Program. I teach Yoga to senior citizens, undergraduates, and students of all levels at various gyms, Temple University and University of the Arts. I #39;ve also led embodied presence Yoga classes for kids at Neighborhood Bike Works Summer Cycling Camp and Girl #39;s Rock Philly Summer Camp.

All sessions are free but registration is required. All registrants will be emailed virtual meeting information the day before. Register here.
