DesignPhiladelphia celebrates the work of local designers, architects, + creative professionals w/ 1

As the oldest design festival of its kind in the country, DesignPhiladelphia highlights the work of thousands of local designers, architects, and creative professionals to demonstrate Philadelphia’s reemergence as a 21st century city shaped by thoughtful design, collaborative business practices, and community engagement. Over the course of eleven days each October, organizations such as universiti

es, cultural institutions, civic associations, city agencies, retailers, manufacturers, and startups across the city participate in 100+ public events (most of them FREE!) including exhibitions, studio tours, talks, workshops for all ages, professional development classes, and imaginative celebrations. DesignPhiladelphia’s mission is to make Philadelphia a hub for design excellence, support economic opportunities for local designers, and demonstrate to the public the impact of design on our everyday lives. DesignPhiladelphia is a program of the Center for Architecture and Design.

Can you believe it’s almost been 20 years since these photo were taken? We can’t either! Check out these unforgettable moments from DesignPhiladelphia’s 2005 Festival.

Two of the exhibitions included here are:

“Josh Owen: Big Idea/Small Packages Gallery Talk” featuring a series of vignettes from tone k**b lamp for Umbra to clocks for Benza, and a lamp and table for Bozart.

“Avant-Garde Industrial Exhibition” which was an exhibition that took place in the Philadelphia International Airport displaying product design from Philadelphia-based designers.

As our first cohort of JADE Fellows finish up their summer, we would be remiss to not thank all of our incredible hosts, supporters, and university partners that made this fellowship what it was. With individuals and companies such as you all, design education in higher education has taken a giant step forward. The Fellows have done fantastic work and spent countless hours perfecting their capstone projects. They set the tone for what this fellowship can be and it is beyond anything we could have dreamed up.

Meet the Strada Team: Sara, Tj, and Megan!

In the Spring 2024 Design Education Semester, these three driven volunteers head into a 7th grade classroom at Bregy Elementary. They not only grew into a tight-knit team outside of their normal work settings, but they also provided impeccable design lessons to the classroom of teenagers.
