Jack started making this mug last summer, using every species of wood he had in the shop. It's definitely a show stopper and was purchased within minutes of being put on display at the Sleepy Hollow Spring Fling last weekend. I had to ask the patron to let me take a photo before he took it with him.

What do you think, should Jack make more?

It was a long, boring winter while Jack recuperated from his "Cardiac Adventure," because his doctors said, no, to all woodworking. That changed 2 months ago when he resumed work on mugs he started during the spring and summer of 2025. Apparently, 2 open heart surgeries, cardioversions and a blood transfusion caused some changes. Come to the Sleepy Hollow Spring Fling in Des Moines, Iowa the next 2 weekends to see for yourself. At least his mugs and straws are as fabulous as ever!

Jack has had a hard road to recovery since his heart attack on August 16th and subsequent open heart surgeries with multiple complications. The doctors finally have his meds dialed in so his vitals are within normal limits, and his 13 incisions and Port/IV holes are healing nicely. Because Jack has multiple metal straps and screws holding his sternum together, he still has to ride in the backseat for awhile yet, but he's been cleared to start cardiac rehabilitation next week. It will be quite awhile before he's cleared to do any type of woodworking so he's bored out of his mind.

Living in an apartment in northern Iowa is a drastic lifestyle change for both of us, but I'm enjoying hot running water and a full sized kitchen. This morning we woke to 31° and I had to scrape frost off the car windows before his doctor appointment. Normally, we're heading south by now, but we'll have to endure the cold weather until his doctor feels it's safe for Jack to travel.

We'll be posting mugs, straws, and some accessories the end of November...just in time for Christmas gift shopping.

Thanks for your prayers, positive vibes and words of encouragement. CHEERS from Jack & Beth

GOOD NEWS: Jack was released from the hospital yesterday. After 6 days of being poked, prodded and shocked, his blood pressure and heart rate are within acceptable limits. Many health issues remain, but will hopefully improve with time and lots of medication. Getting Jack to stick to the 1.5 liter liquid restriction per day is a challenge, especially since he's used to drinking 3 times that amount every day. His heart, lungs and kidneys are much happier though.

Thank you so much for your prayers and positive thoughts.

Cheers!

Have you ever been slapped on the side of your head by your doctor? Jack has!

Jack had his 16-day follow-up appointment yesterday and his doctor re-admitted him to the hospital because of Afib & Aflutter, severe edema & fluid around his lungs, shortness of breath, high blood pressure and some wonky lab results. The good news is that his multiple incisions are healing nicely.

After a night of intensive IV meds and minimal fluid intake, not much had changed. The doctor pressed hard against Jack's carotid artery on his neck to see if it would reset his heart rate (he did this when he was hospitalized before), but this time Jack flat lined and the doctor immediately quit pressing and slapped Jack on the side of the head to bring him back. I wasn't in the room, but the nurses told me they all gasped in horror when Jack's heart stopped and again a second later when he hit him, hard. Jack said he was confused and then mad that the doctor hit him. The doctor is lucky he didn't get hit back out of a reflex reaction. Jack may have been sitting in a hospital gown, loopy from his heart stopping, but he's still stronger than any man I know. Now all the cardiac unit staff are talking about the incident.

Anyway, Jack is scheduled for another cardioversion for Monday if the meds don't regulate his heart over the weekend. If that doesn't work, they will do heart ablation surgery. He's breathing easier since more than a liter of fluid was removed from around his lungs earlier today.

Please pray the meds do their job and Jack doesn't have to undergo any more procedures.

It will be a week tomorrow since Jack was released from the hospital after his heart attack on August 16th. We spent 3 nights in a motel in Albert Lea, Minnesota because both elevators in our apartment building were broken. It was a bad situation because Jack couldn't lie on the bed because he can't breathe when he's on his back and no amount of pillows helped. The only chair was a small office chair so he couldn't put his feet up, which he was supposed to do. I bought a used chair and footstool for him, but it didn't help much. The $8,000 Prevena incision device started making a horrible beeping sound and instead of going back to the hospital 50 miles away, Jack took it off (he had watched the doctor replace 9 or 10 while in the hospital). Needless to say, his incision started seeping and actually bled whenever he coughed. We went through several boxes of sterile pads, gauze and tape.

On Monday (Sept. 8th) we killed time driving around the town of our youth, waiting for the call that at least one elevator was in working order. The call never came so we drove to Mason City and waited in the car for nearly 4 hours. I made a couple of trips up the 103 steps to our apartment and to the basement to glare at the arrogant 20 something repair guy. By 4:30 the elevator was operational, but no lights. It was the first time Jack had gotten to see it and he was grateful to have a comfortable lift chair to sit in.

I could write a 200 page book on everything that happened during that 4 day/3 night stay. Jack should've been in the hospital or nursing home and I should've been in a mental institution.

He had his first appointment with the surgeon on Tuesday and it went well considering the rough weekend. The doctor reminded Jack that he will have a long, slow recovery due to the damage to his heart, all the complications, and 3 surgeries with general anesthesia he went through. Jack will never be good as new, but he's determined to be better than before.

Jack and I are so grateful for all of your prayers and good vibes since his heart attack on August 16th and have no doubt they helped him through the many complications and challenges he's faced during his 21 days in the hospital. This morning he gets to shed his hospital gown and is being released into my care and custody. He has a long recovery ahead of him and lots of life changes, but we'll both be healthier because of it. The biggest concern is healing his sternum after it pulled apart and had to be repaired with titanium bands, ties, screws and glue.

The next few months will involve LOTS of doctor visits, weekly blood work, cardiac rehabilitation and home health care so staying in our motorhome, living a nomadic life isn't an option. For the first time since 2008, Jack will be living in a home that doesn't have wheels. Our home for the next several months will be a 6th floor apartment in a 1869 renovated bank building in Mason City, Iowa. If you want more details on Jack's "Cardiac Adventure," you can look at my personal page, Beth Atz.

Jack and I are grateful for your prayers and good vibes and have no doubt they helped.

My husband, Jack Burns, had a heart attack on Saturday afternoon and has been in the hospital since that time. He underwent a challenging open heart surgery on Wednesday, but he is doing well and was moved out of the critical care unit this evening. We've been told today would be the most painful and have hopes for a more comfortable day tomorrow.

Obviously, we won't be vending at the Sleepy Hollow Ren Faire in Des Moines, Iowa and won't be making any new mugs or straws for a couple of months.

I would appreciate your prayers and good vibes for Jack.

Some of you have been faithfully following for many years, and some have just learned about Old Bear Creek and the high quality wooden drinking vessels and straws I make. Recently, we've gotten a few questions asking if we have a shop and where we're located. So we're sharing a reel that answers the questions. You may have seen it before, but take a minute to enjoy the beautiful places we've set up our mobile shop.

We need warm & dry to stay

Cuz mugs & straws are ready now, but humid air will not allow...
the finish to be done!

Dang it, the epoxy won't cure in this horrible humidity & I'm gettin' mad. I don't care if my poem doesn't rhyme either!
