Statement Regarding the San Diego Mosque Murders

The recent murders that took place at the Islamic Center of San Diego have deeply shaken hearts across the country and beyond. Any attack upon innocent life, especially within a house of worship, is a tragedy that should disturb the conscience of every human being regardless of faith, race, or background.

As Muslims, we unequivocally condemn the murder of innocent people anywhere in the world. We condemn violence directed at worshippers in masājid, churches, synagogues, temples, schools, homes, streets, and public spaces. The sanctity of human life is immense in Islām, and no grievance, ideology, or hatred can justify the taking of innocent life.

At the same time, societies must recognize that hatred, dehumanization, and inflammatory rhetoric carry dangerous consequences. Communities cannot continuously be vilified and stripped of their humanity without eventually seeing that poison manifest itself in tragic ways.

Our response as a Muslim community must remain rooted in dignity, wisdom, unity, and faith — not panic and not hatred. We should continue supporting our local masājid, checking in on one another, remaining vigilant, and representing the beauty of Islām through service, compassion, and prophetic character.

We pray for mercy upon those who lost their lives, healing for the injured, patience for the families, and protection for all innocent people everywhere.

Let us first start off by thanking you. Your calls, letters, and witness slips helped get HB 2723 to a hearing, and the turnout and testimony on April 30th showed lawmakers our strength. The hearing record is overwhelmingly supportive — now we need to push for a floor vote.

What we need from you

1) Take action now — send a letter to your legislators!

2) Join our Lobby Day — Monday, May 20, 10:30 AM at the Illinois State Capitol. If enough people sign up, IL Coalition for Human Rights can work with Peoria for Palestine to arrange buses and bring attendees round-trip.

Why this matters

- Illinois' 2015 Anti-BDS bill is a regressive threat to First Amendment rights, and we are fighting for HB2723, a bill to overturn it. We need more representatives to sign onto this bill.

- A strong in-person presence at the Capitol shows lawmakers this coalition is growing and serious.

Quick ask (please reply to this email if you are interested)

- Can you come to the Capitol on May 20?

- If you can, how many people will you bring?

If you need a ride, accessibility accommodations, or have questions, reply to this email and we’ll help.

Thank you — your effort and dedication to liberation has brought us this far. Let’s keep building power together!

In solidarity,

The Peoria For Palestine team in coordination with the Illinois Coalition for Human Rights.
