Statement Regarding the San Diego Mosque Murders
The recent murders that took place at the Islamic Center of San Diego have deeply shaken hearts across the country and beyond. Any attack upon innocent life, especially within a house of worship, is a tragedy that should disturb the conscience of every human being regardless of faith, race, or background.
As Muslims, we unequivocally condemn the murder of innocent people anywhere in the world. We condemn violence directed at worshippers in masÄjid, churches, synagogues, temples, schools, homes, streets, and public spaces. The sanctity of human life is immense in IslÄm, and no grievance, ideology, or hatred can justify the taking of innocent life.
At the same time, societies must recognize that hatred, dehumanization, and inflammatory rhetoric carry dangerous consequences. Communities cannot continuously be vilified and stripped of their humanity without eventually seeing that poison manifest itself in tragic ways.
Our response as a Muslim community must remain rooted in dignity, wisdom, unity, and faith ā not panic and not hatred. We should continue supporting our local masÄjid, checking in on one another, remaining vigilant, and representing the beauty of IslÄm through service, compassion, and prophetic character.
We pray for mercy upon those who lost their lives, healing for the injured, patience for the families, and protection for all innocent people everywhere.
