Sturgeon 100 - The Midwest's Most Remote Gravel Road Race

Sturgeon 100 - The Midwest's Most Remote Gravel Road Race The Sturgeon 100 is a self supported gravel road race through the roads of the Ottawa National Forest. http://www.sturgeon100.com/

There are 100 kilometer (Metric) and 100 mile (Imperial) options. The first 60 miles is a loop north of Kenton, circling the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness Area. Imperial racers loop back through Kenton and complete a loop south of town. Surfaces range from pavement, to rocky two tracks, to sandy roads, to wet clay and probably everything in between- including miles and miles of impeccably mainta

ined gravel forest highways. There are a tough climb or two as you cross over the Sturgeon River a couple times. For adventure minded bicyclists of all abilities. For more information and to register, visit http://www.sturgeon100.com/

Hi folks, there might be a Sturgeon yet this year! If you haven't heard, The Sturgeon 100 management team recently relocated to a new global headquarters. There have been a few minor details to take care of like choosing office furniture fabrics, toilets that flush, central heating, and evicting the family of pine martens that previously occupied this location. If renovations stay on track this summer and legal proceedings against the pine martens are resolved in our favor, we hope to host a fall event. Stay tuned! If you want to go ride the course, be aware that the forest service is finishing up the bridge work over the jumbo river west of forest highway 16, south of Kenton. Last I heard it should be done in a couple of weeks.

Well, sorry folks. Restrictions have lifted a bit in the UP, but gatherings of 10 or more are still not allowed. We're going to indefinitely postpone for now. Hope to see you all before the snow flies!

Hi folks, we're still being optimistic about the 6/13 date we picked for our event. We'll probably do something different for entry requirements though- don't want to send you to the post office unnecessarily. Have you heard of this new thing called the FAX machine? Sounds pretty amazing! Stay tuned, go ride your bikes, and stay away from other people.

Whoops! Somebody dropped his coins in front of the slot machine. Everybody else hang tight - we’ll finalize a date soon.

Oh, hello there! Remember when we used to put on a bike race? We do to, and we really miss doing so. A little bird has been suggesting dates for such and it looks like 6/13 might be the best choice. What do you all think?

Hola amigos. How's she goin'? I know it's been a long time since I last rapped at ya, but I've been busier than a a one-legged man in a butt kickin’ contest. We're hoping for a fall date this year, but may settle for late summer depending on how the UPCROSS schedule pans out. In the meantime, enjoy all the great yooper spring classics coming up like La Fleche du Nord, Ronde Van Skandia, and Hiawatha's Revenge. If you'd like to get some miles in on the sturgeon course, beware of the following- the rideable line looks a bit tight.

Please be aware that Forest Road 2270 is CLOSED due to a washout that occured from recent rain events. Access to Silver Mountain will be available from the north only (FR 2274) and access to the Bear's Den overlook will be available from the south only. For more information, visit the Ottawa's website or call any of our offices.

Give the gift of a Sturgeon 100 safety vest! $15 with pick up in the greater Tapiola metropolitan area. Add $5 for shipping. Some have bikes on the front pocket and some don’t. Some are green logo and some are black. I don’t have a lot, so you probably don’t get a choice. Message me your desired size, and if I have it I’ll message you my PayPal. ✌️❤️🚲 ~Heather

Well, so much for my dream of hosting the 33 mile checkpoint at the top of the stairs.

Sounds like there are at least a few folks talking about coming down to ride this Saturday. Almost all are in universal agreement that my 8am start is overly ambitious. Nonetheless, I still plan to depart then. If you look in the bed of the white Toyota Tacoma with a black canvas topper, you'll find a plastic bag of some sort with cue sheets and log to sign and out if you like. Forecasts have been pretty variable, but I'm betting on at least a little rain. Hope to see you there!

Coming 9/15/2018: Sturgeon Lite! Same great 100 mile/kilometer taste, but less of that organizational filling. Think "group ride", not "race". I'll be rolling from the FH-16 roadside park at 8AM to ride the full imperial course. There will be no registration, no timing, no checkpoints, and no support of any kind (including pulled pork sandwiches). There are no rules; arrive late, ride the course backwards, short cut the hard parts, explore that cool side road you've been going past for years, or maybe make a run for the Wisconsin border just to say you did. If you are seeking a more structured, competitive event, join us two weeks later for Jeremy Kershaw's Heck of the North in Duluth, MN on 9/29.

Congrats to Andrew and Elizabeth who braved the heat between the storms to ride a good chunk of the course! Just before what would have been the start time, all hell broke loose in Kenton- hail, lightning, lots of rain, and wind. I hightailed it north to get ahead of it. This photo was from just north of the course. Looks like the area south of M-28 is taking the brunt of it, but I was happy to be in a car through this.
