Imagine qualifying for your first NFR, then having to sit it out. I’ve been dreading this day for Anita Ellis since hearing the Blackfoot, Idaho barrel racer suffered a traumatic brain injury in a November 15 fall on concrete at an event in Utah. She then spent 10 days in the hospital in Salt Lake City before being released to outpatient therapy.
Anita’s husband, Brandon Ellis, has been amazing about being there for his wife and also keeping her friends and fans informed on her progress. As he put it yesterday, on Thanksgiving Day, “TBI recovery is wild, unpredictable and emotional, but she’s here, she’s fighting and we’re grateful for every single day.
Prayers and positivity for Cowgirl Anita and all who love her.

Anita Ellis Forced to Turn Out of NFR Due to Injury, Julie Plourde to Replace Her
On November 15, 2025, National Finals Rodeo - NFR qualifier Anita Ellis had a serious fall from her futurity horse and hit her head when she landed on the concrete at the arena in South Jordan, Utah. She was transported to the hospital in Salt Lake City where she remained until November 25 when she was released to go home to continue outpatient therapy.
Prior to the accident Ellis of Blackfoot, Idaho, was preparing for her first NFR. While her recovery is progressing her team of doctors have not released her to ride at this time, resulting in the difficult reality of having to turn out of the 2025 NFR.
With that decision Julie Plourde of Krum, Texas, who is ranked 16th, will now take Ellis’ place and have an opportunity to run at her first NFR. She will be awarded back number 119.

❤️Update #11 Anita Ellis From Brandon Ellis ❤️
One day out of the hospital and Anita crushed her first one-hour physical therapy session. Balance testing, screening, even some one-legged leg presses — she showed up like she had something to prove.
And like anyone who just dominated their own little competition, we celebrated the only way that made sense… McDonald’s.
We finally found the magic combo she’ll actually eat: a plain cheeseburger and a chocolate shake.
Today is a win-win-win.

Update #10 Today we got the news we’ve been praying for — Anita has officially been cleared to go home and start outpatient therapy.
This was the biggest stride in her recovery yet, and it honestly feels like a miracle in motion.
We were also sent the security footage from the accident… and seeing it made one thing crystal clear: we are unbelievably lucky to still have her with us. And lucky that Deena wasn’t hurt worse than she was.
Through all of it, Anita keeps reminding us that it’s going to be okay — even on the days we’re the ones who need the reassuring. Her strength and attitude are unreal.

❤️Update #9 Anita Ellis From Brandon Ellis ❤️
Poor Deena took the night shift in Anita’s room and didn’t sleep a wink. She stayed on high alert thinking Anita was going to spring out of bed like a ninja. So grateful for her family—everyone’s been showing up in big ways.
Kirby flew in from Illinois on Sunday and has been here all week, taking his turn “sleeping” on the couch between nurse check-ins and taking copious notes. Vauna has been driving back and forth and keeping Anita looking fresh—hair, hygiene, the whole deal.
And here’s today’s comedy clip:
• Kirby: hands Anita her melted, watered-down Power Shake “Hey, the nurse is coming in soon. Let’s sit you up so you can take a sip.”
• Anita: death-stare “You know this crap is really gross… It is. It’s really gross.”
(takes a sip)
“I’ll drink it… but this stuff is gross and you know it!”
• Kirby: trying not to laugh, absolutely speechless, slightly intimidated
😂😂😂
She also pulled her own sweatpants on today and completed her memory games and sequencing drills like a champ. Every day, another step forward.
