Fifth Year of Palmyra Holiday Arts Fest Set for the Village Saturday

The 2023 Palmyra Arts Fest in Palmyra Village will be Saturday, Dec. 9, 10 a.m.–3p.m. Event coordinator Erika Mitchell, of the recently relocated Sweet Art Emporium, says the 2023 version “is going to be our biggest one yet,” with more than 25 vendors slated to participate. Food trucks, live music and an appearance by Santa round out the merry occasion.

First held in 2019, Mitchell reimaged the Arts Fest in 2020 as an outdoor arts market for local artists and artisans to show and sell their work during the COVID pandemic. Mitchell says the event also stives to show off the lovely and historic Village.

Among the offerings, Belle Rock Farm (known locally for its lavender products) will also be selling their highly sought after, festively decorated live greens wreaths.

The Fluvanna Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring artist and pastor Tim Stark as Santa. He will be joined by elves from the non-profit kids theatre group Empowered Players. Though Santa likes to wander around the event, his home base is the Chamber office. Free photographs with Santa will be available.

Stark crafts in wood and resin while his wife Jorja crafts in words, as can be enjoyed in her highly-recommended children’s book Who Will Catch a Milkweed? Copies will be available for purchase.

New this year: buy something from any of the vendors and receive a coupon for $1.00 off any item of paint-your-own ceramics from Sweet Art Emporium.

For more information, find and like the Facebook event page, or stop in Sweet Art Emporium, now located a few doors down from Food Lion.

Hance House on Holiday Home Tour Tribute to Mother

Denise Hance is showing her home on the Holiday Home Tour as a tribute to her late mother, Jane Crivaro, whose beautifully decorated home she always thought should be on the Tour, she said. The Holiday Home Tour on Saturday, Dec. 9, is sponsored by the Lake Monticello Beautification Corps.

“I used to try to talk Mom into it, but she wouldn’t,” Hance said. But now many of her mother’s decorations will be on display at the Hance house, along with many more. “I’ve got a lot of her stuff and now people get to see it,” she said. Hance said she’ll get a big decorating assist from daughter Karly, who’s studying interior design at Virginia Tech.

The Hance house will feature Lenox products this holiday season. The kitchen area, for example, will display “a lot” of Lenox Spice Village houses, Hance said. One Christmas tree will be all Lenox ornaments, she said. The kitchen will also have a life-sized Santa.

In the living room, another tree will be all Disney ornaments. That room also has a beautifully decorated fireplace and other decorations.

The tree on the screened porch will be more rustic or traditional, with a variety of ornaments. The porch also will feature two decorated antique bird cages.

The dining room table will be fully set for Christmas dinner, using her mother’s dishes. It will have many other traditional decorations, plus gold stars and Santas, as well as “a lot” of her mother’s fancy garlands there and throughout the house.

Decorations continue outside, with a shed next to the house decorated like a holiday candy shop, and Mr. and Mrs. Santa peeking from upper floor windows.

Tom and Denise Hance moved to the Lake in 2011 from New Jersey, following most of her extended family, including her parents. “I like that we still have seasons here,” Tom said. “It’s really beautiful.”

Denise Hance said she likes “everything the Lake offers for families.” She said her son, Thomas, used all of them – golf, fishing, the pool and the beaches – this summer. “We use just about every amenity, and we’re glad to help keep it nice,” she said.

The Holiday Home Tour will conclude with a drawing at Ashlawn Clubhouse with great prizes. All proceeds from the tour and raffle go to the Lake Monticello Beautification Corps, which uses them to support plantings and other efforts to beautify the Lake main gate, clubhouses, playgrounds and other facilities.

Tickets are available for a $10-per-person donation by emailing [email protected].
