PADUCAH AFTER DARK 👻
Ghost Story 2 of 6: The Face in the Mirror

He was cleaning the bank alone—until the mirror seemed to tell him otherwise.

A published account of Paducah’s River City Ghost Tour describes a janitor noticing a second face in his reflection at the old First National Bank. Turning around revealed nobody. After another encounter, he reportedly withdrew his money.

The apparition was associated with Charles Pennebaker, a former bank president.

The wider tour legend links Pennebaker to financial disaster in 1929 and a tragic death. It portrays his supposed return as connected to the people whose money he had tried to protect. Those biographical details still need archival confirmation, so we’re treating that explanation as part of the legend.

The mirror encounter is what makes this story particularly unsettling. A reflection seems to offer proof that someone is standing close by. Turning around should settle the question immediately.

Instead, in this account, it creates a new one.

Who was the janitor seeing? And why did the experience make him decide to take his money elsewhere?

We don’t have an independently verified statement from the janitor establishing what happened. What we do have is an established Paducah ghost-tour story attached to a real downtown landmark.

It’s the sort of tale that might change the way you look at a familiar building—or make you glance over your shoulder the next time a reflection catches your attention.

Would you have stayed to finish the job?

👻 The Calvert Drive-In Theater 🎃

10/13/2026

For nearly 15 years, we’ve welcomed guests from around the world—and for the past six years, we’ve been proud to call Paducah home and build The Dim Light into what it is today.

Now, we’re bringing that experience to more properties through Crashpad Paducah.

Crashpad is our new full-service short-term rental hosting company, created for property owners who are ready to step away from the daily demands of hosting without compromising the quality of their property or their guests’ experience.

Through Crashpad, we’ll manage a growing collection of independently owned properties throughout our community. Each property will retain its own identity while benefiting from the same attentive service, thoughtful presentation and high standards our guests have come to expect from The Dim Light.

We’ll handle everything from creating and managing property listings to guest communication, housekeeping coordination, maintenance issues and the countless details involved in operating a successful short-term rental.

If you already own a short-term rental, have a furnished property you’re considering offering to guests or simply feel exhausted by the demands of hosting, we’d love to discuss what a partnership with Crashpad could look like.

We also invite you to follow the new Crashpad Hospitality Co. page as we begin introducing the properties joining our collection.

PADUCAH AFTER DARK 👻
Six ghost stories. One town. A Halloween countdown.

Every town has stories people tell after dark. In Paducah, some of those stories have become attached to places we pass every day.

An old downtown bank. A memorial in Oak Grove Cemetery. The riverfront. The Cohen building, where Stella’s name still welcomes people through the door.

Last year, many of you joined us as we explored the stories of Stella and Della Barnes. This October, we’re returning to those familiar names and introducing more characters from Paducah’s ghost lore.

There’s a traveling fiddler whose music supposedly continued after his death. A mysterious reflection seen by a man working alone. A strange death in a room above a saloon. And an Island Creek tale that raises a question: how much of a ghost story can we actually trace to history?

Throughout the month, we’ll tell six stories, exploring the historical record and the folklore that grew around it.

Several of our tales come from published accounts of Market House Theatre’s River City Ghost Tours. We encourage you to hear Paducah’s stories from their guides in person.

Look for “Paducah After Dark” and the story number to follow along. We begin Tuesday, October 13, with the ghost fiddler and finish on Halloween with Stella.

Which Paducah ghost story did you grow up hearing?
