John Coltrane would have been 100 years old on September 23rd.

There’s something about that milestone that makes us pause—not only to remember one of the greatest musicians of all time, but to reflect on what jazz represents and why this music continues to matter.

At the Lake Arbor Jazz Festival, jazz has never been simply a genre of music. It is freedom. Experimentation. Conversation. Mastery. Innovation. And the courage to create something the world has never heard before.

That spirit is at the heart of our Listening Room Series.

The Listening Room was created to give audiences an opportunity to experience jazz differently—in a more intimate setting where emerging voices, accomplished musicians, alternative sounds, and new interpretations of the music can take center stage.

Because at the Lake Arbor Jazz Festival, we don’t simply celebrate jazz as music, we celebrate jazz as culture.

John Coltrane helped redefine what was possible with this music. A century after his birth, generations of musicians are still exploring the doors he helped open.

Happy 100th Birthday, John Coltrane.

A century later, the music is still speaking.

And we’re still listening.
