Oshkosh Jazz Festival has always been billed as family friendly because we know where the next generation of musicians will originate. Who doesn’t love this energy!?!

Emmet Cohen, Joe Farnsworth, and Philip Norris were beyond extraordinary. At times they played at lightning speed, yet every note was perfectly in sync. Fluid, dynamic, and alive. Their synergy radiated from the stage, smiles passing between them and spilling into the audience.

Mar and Benny joined in, and the energy grew. The crowd swayed, clapped, and moved with the music, Main Street itself pulsing with rhythm as the night flowed between the musicians and everyone gathered to listen. Truly unforgettable.

Benny was back and what a presence he brought! In his fun navy pinstripe suit, he embodied the spirit of a classic entertainer. One audience member summed it up perfectly: “He should be a late-night TV host with that wit, talent, and style.”

From singing to soaring on his horn, Benny showcased his wide range and kept the evening flowing as host. Mixing effortlessly with Mar, Sal, and Emmet, he tied the afternoon and evening together with charm, humor, and world-class musicianship.

A Tribute to John Harmon

The afternoon began with a moving celebration of our beloved teacher, mentor, and friend, John Harmon. His son Noah opened the set, followed by Mike Kubicki, Matt Buchman, and Marty Robinson each performing works John had written or arranged. With a glass of wine in hand, John sat on stage as these accomplished musicians honored him in the most fitting way: through his music.

As the tribute concluded, John himself took the piano for a long, heartfelt set, joined at one point by local jazz treasures Janet Planet and Tom Washatka. With John’s 90th birthday on the horizon, this moment was a reminder of the lasting impact of his music, his teaching, and his spirit. A beautiful tribute for a beautiful soul.

Beneath the glow of city light,
the band takes flight—
piano keys ripple like water,
a trumpet leans into the night,
drums answer back in sparks of red.
Bass holds steady, heartbeat deep,
while strangers sway on sidewalks
as if the world has paused to listen.

Outside the frame, laughter gathers—
rings of turquoise on lifted hands,
a wide-brimmed hat tilted toward delight,
old friends catching stories midstream,
young eyes drifting to glowing screens.
The music binds them all the same,
threads weaving through the evening air,
tying past and present in one rhythm.

Here, time is softened,
folded into melody.
Here, sponsors’ banners flutter,
but gratitude rises higher still—
in the hum of voices,
in the tapping of feet,
in the knowing that for one sweet night
the city itself became a song.
