Today we received some truly sad news. Anyone in the events, festivals, or outdoor activities community in Orlando or across Florida certainly knows Penny Dixon — the beloved shave-ice and candy-frost lady who showed up for everyone and supported every event with her warm spirit.
Penny was a sweetheart. Always there with her sons, always greeting everyone with a smile. Over the years she even stopped charging me for my favorite shave-ice with condensed milk. I tried not to indulge too often, but every time I did, it took me right back to my school days in Guyana… snow-cones with condensed milk!!
Our professional relationship grew into a genuine friendship, and she and her family were simply beautiful people inside and out.
Penny passed away on Monday after a courageous battle with cancer.
On behalf of the Caribbean American Passport, Orlando Carnival Downtown, the CAHM Festival, CAP Multicultural, the Guyanese American Cultural Association of Central Florida, the Sunshine Reggae Fest, and everyone who has worked with us and cherished Penny Dixon — the shave-ice and candy-frost queen with the beautiful heart and ever-present smile — we extend our deepest sympathy to her family.
She will be dearly missed.
