Well said!
In 1975, Margaret Hamilton—famous for playing the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz—appeared on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Fred Rogers invited her to demystify movie villains, helping children understand that her terrifying character was just a kind actress wearing costumes, makeup, and a hat.
In episode 1453 (which first aired on May 14, 1975), Hamilton visited the Mister Rogers' Neighborhood set to discuss the iconic role with Rogers. The goal of the appearance was to address the lingering fears that the witch character caused for generations of children.
During the episode, she appeared as a warm, gentle person who loved watching the program with her grandchildren. Rogers then helped her put on her witch's skirt, cape, and hat right on screen. This allowed young viewers to see that she was a real lady just "dressing up" to play a part, much like children do during Halloween. Hamilton also demonstrated her famous cackle, reassuring kids that she could turn the scary voice on and off.
In many ways, this is also the goal of the Hilltown Hags and all the thousands of other broom dancing groups around the world...to surround the image of the "witch" with joy, not fear, for both children AND adults. We are real ladies playing "dress up", all year long, and sprinking a bit of happiness and a pinch of whimsy wherever we go!
Thanks to the Wolfshager Hexenbrut, Margaret Hamilton, the cast of Wicked, and all the other famous "witches" on stage and screen, we can continue our mission to spread joy through the magic of dance, all year, not just at Halloween!
