π–₯Έ Ecstatic dance, as it’s known in the West, is often marketed as a free-flowing, liberating movement practice - but its roots run much deeper. Across Africa, the African diaspora, and many Indigenous cultures, dance has long been a sacred tool for healing, spiritual connection, and community. From West African trance dances to Haitian Vodou ceremonies and Afro-Brazilian Candomblé rituals, movement has been a way to honor ancestors, enter altered states, and channel divine energy. But like many other spiritual practices, ecstatic dance has been repackaged in Western wellness spaces, often stripped of its cultural and spiritual depth. What was once communal and deeply tied to ancestry and ritual is now sold as an individualistic experience for self-discovery - one that often centers wh?te bodies while erasing the Black, Brown, and Indigenous traditions that birthed it.

Movement is universal, but the way it’s framed matters. Decolonizing spirituality means acknowledging its origins, honoring the cultures that have carried these traditions, and making space for those whose histories are embedded in the rhythm. π–₯Έ

(I also want to remind you that this space is meant to uplift and empower Black, Brown, and Indigenous people. My comment section is not the place for wh?te people to argue whether this topic is β€˜divisive’ or my tone is β€˜too harsh.’ Nor is it a place to seek validation that you’re already doing everything right or to debate why you’re supposedly not privileged - you can have those discussions on your own platforms.
