4 years ago, I experienced Memorial Day, for the first time, through the eyes of a man who was still mourning the loss of a hero he served alongside. In my position at Warriors and the way in which I was raised, I had always respected this holiday, but 4 years ago, my appreciation and respect for this holiday changed.
I, now, have truly seen firsthand what this holiday MEANS. For many, this holiday is about celebrating freedom and honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. And for some, this holiday is a reminder of the mom, dad, brother, sister, son, daughter...that never came home. A day that reminds them of the worst day of their life.
But for many others, this holiday is about truly LIVING for those they served alongside that didnβt make it home.
It is about taking a walk down a very painful memory lane and appreciating the time they had with those heroes, thinking of their families who are left behind and wondering what it would have been like if it were different.
And for some, survivors guilt comes with that walk.
No matter where you are in your celebration of Memorial Day, take a moment to stop and truly appreciate the sacrifices that are made each & every day so that we get to live in the United States. Appreciate that we live in a democracy because men and women choose to give up their life for people like me and you, who they will never meet.
