Ashlee Byrd Doula

Ashlee Byrd Doula Ashlee Byrd-OKC Birth Doula and Certified Lactation Counselor Nested Oak was birthed out of a dream to see families thrive as they grow and expand.

It is my goal to help my clients feel prepared, respected, and confident; regardless of how their journey unfolds. Although the number one goal of birth is a healthy mama and healthy baby, I believe there is much more to the story. Birth is a transformative experience for the entire family and holds great value for the rest of your life. My hope is that with my addition to your birth team, you wil

l begin or continue this marathon of raising children with strength, confidence, and loving support. I do not believe there is a “one size fits all” best way to birth your baby. I do, however, believe in the importance of informed decision making. I believe there is a time and place for medical intervention and technology in the context of evidence based care. I don’t believe birth is something to be feared. I do believe it can be a peaceful and joyful experience. Lastly, I deeply respect care-providers and I believe in the importance of a trustworthy and open partnership with whomever you choose to care for you and your growing family. I support families in hospitals, birth centers, and at home.

Wow. Absolutely honored and grateful to be voted BEST DOULA by you all for 2026. 🥹

To all 200+ families I’ve had the honor of walking with these past 10 years, thank you. I still can’t believe I get to witness such incredible women bringing forth new life. It’s a beautiful and holy thing to bear witness to women becoming mothers, men becoming fathers, and all the miraculous transformative moments that are tucked away in the rooms that babies are born. 🤎

So many other incredible businesses and people were chosen and nominated for the 2026 OKC Mom’s Choice Awards. Go give them love and support!

March brought spring blooms, a quick birth full of some of the most beautiful family support I’ve seen, a wedding with my forever wedding date, sunset walks, a trip to the mountains with friends, and out of town soccer tournaments. After a busier January and February, March was a wonderful time of rest. 🤎

Catching you guys up on what I’ve been up to this year! Since launching Expectant Doulas, I’ve been pretty busy on the back side of things and still doing what I normally do!

January was filled with postpartum shifts, three beautiful births (one super special three-peat client!!), new headshots, lots of walks, a networking event with the Expectant team and trying to recover in between.

9 things I’ve learned in 9 years of being a doula.

1. Birth gives us the opportunity to be taken to the edge of ourselves. At our edge is where we soften. It’s where transformation and expansion happen. Our capacity grows. No two edges look the same.
2. The massive amount of information on the internet is stripping away our intuition as mothers and leading us to fear and anxiety. We are outsourcing at a time we should be looking more inward and upward.
3. There is not a one size fits all best way to birth your baby. It’s about surrender, intuition, and agency. Your journey will not look the same as someone else’s.
4. It never gets old witnessing the birth of a baby. It’s holy ground. A place of joy, wonder, and worship.
5. Birth preparation is way more about preparing our hearts than it is about preparing our minds. Education can only take you so far.
6. You cannot predict birth. There is mystery to it. It’s through that mystery that we learn we cannot control, so we must open ourselves up and surrender.
7. Your pain tolerance has nothing to do with your ability to have an unmedicated birth. But your perception of the pain does.
8. Pregnancy is expansive. Physically and spiritually.
9. The tender strength and love of a supportive and protective husband in the birth process is one of the most powerful tools I’ve witnessed as a doula.

A few weeks ago, I had one of the wildest birth stories I’ve had as a doula!

It was a Friday evening at 6pm and I popped open my email and saw an inquiry sitting in my inbox that was sent earlier that afternoon. Mama was 37 weeks and had just recently moved to Oklahoma and was looking for a doula. I originally responded saying that I was full for October, but I could get her connected to someone on my team. It had been a few hours since her original email and when she responded back again she said “I’m a little bit in a pickle at the moment because I think I’m actually having contractions right now ….not sure if this is false and he’ll be here in a couple days or the real thing.”

Turns out it was the real thing. 😂 We made plans to head to the hospital and I met them there around 9:45pm.

After a very swift labor, her sweet baby boy was born at 10:10pm.

Doula work always keeping me on my toes. 🤎

Can I be really honest with you guys for a minute?

Induction is not the problem. The fear of it is.

I sit across from families at prenatal visits every year that need a medically indicated induction and they are deeply fearful of it. They desire as little intervention as possible, but their baby and their body are telling a story that a little help is needed.

They have seen the Instagram reels and TikToks saying how terrible inductions are. How they should be avoided at all costs. They feel defeated before they’ve even started.

But guess what? It is absolutely possible to have your baby without an epidural, even with an induction.

I looked back at the last two years of clients and ran the stats.
Out of my clients that wanted unmedicated births but ended up being induced… 69% went on to birth their babies without epidurals.

Yes, spontaneous labor is the ideal in most cases. But…if your body and your baby need a little help getting labor going for medical reasons, you don’t have to throw all your hopes out the window.

You can do it. You are strong. You are capable. You have everything you need.

10 years ago, I was freshly 22 and in the fog of the early postpartum days. I had no idea what I was doing and wow I felt insecure about that. I was struggling with breastfeeding, lost in a world I knew nothing about. I was scared to ask for help or ask questions about things I was uncertain of, thinking that somehow revealed to the people in my life that I didn’t know what I was doing.

I’m not sure where I picked up the idea that anyone expected me to know what I was doing at all.

Looking back, I wish I could give that new mama a hug. Tell her that it’s absolutely okay that she doesn’t know what she’s doing. I wish I could tell her that no one really knows what they’re doing the first time anyway. I wish I could tell her that the knowing grows over time through wisdom, discernment, community, failures, and joys. I wish I could tell her to let her people see her right where she was at.

I wish I could sit with her at 3am while she was rocking her baby and singing through tears, “Lord I need you. Oh I need you. Every hour I need you.” I wish I could show her all the ways God would meet her in the next 10 years. How those middle of the night prayers would be answered time and time again. I wish I could tell her to pay more attention to the little joys and seek the beauty in the mundane, to get the word “should” out of her vocabulary. I wish I could tell her that who she was would be enough.
