This month’s Red Dirt Writes takes place on Tuesday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Literati Press in the Paseo. Durell Carter will lead a free writing workshop on list poetry. Bring your notebook & a writing utensil. 📝

List Poetry 📜

Writing a category/list poem can teach us the importance of not just the subject, but what we hold important to us. This workshop will focus on how the accumulation of the mundane, the extraordinary, and the disconnected can help create a cohesive poem that’s worthy of being remembered. 💭

Durell Carter is a writer based in Oklahoma City. He holds an M.A. in Literature from the University of Central Oklahoma. His work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best of the Net, and the Best New Poets Anthology. He is the author of the chapbook Mr. Monday Morning’s Broken Songs and Testimonies and the forthcoming poetry collection Views From the Red-Light Aquarium. ☔️

On Sunday, September 20, Poetic Justice will lead 3 events at Mayflower Congregational Church. These events are free and open to the public. 💒

Poetic Justice is a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts-in-corrections organization that offers restorative writing and creative arts programs to individuals who are or have been incarcerated in women’s prisons or jails. 📝

At 9:15 a.m. there will be a screening of the documentary “POETIC JUSTICE: The Art of Healing” followed by a Q&A with Poetic Justice. Donuts and coffee will be provided. 🎥🍩☕️

During the 10:15 workship service, Poetic Justice will speak about the power of trauma-informed creative writing and community. 📖

After worship service (around 11:15 a.m.) Poetic Justice will lead a workshop on how to better understand restorative writing and creative arts, and how to integrate them as a spiritual practice for healing and soul-care. 📚

You can attend any or all of these events. Mayflower Church, located at 3901 NW 63rd Street in Oklahoma City, is a progressive Christian church that is open and affirming of LGTBQ+ individuals. All are welcome! 🏳️‍🌈

Poet-Tree with Oklahoma Forestry Services 🌳

We’ll write poems about trees! Get it? Poet-tree? Bring your walking shoes and plan on getting outside for this workshop. We’ll practice close observation and learn about our arboreal neighbors along the way! 🌲

Tony Pascall is the education coordinator for the Oklahoma Forestry Services, where he plans and implements education and outreach events for schools, clubs, scout groups, and more, all around the state. He is also the state coordinator for Project Learning Tree and board president for The Oklahoma Association for Environmental Education (OKAEE). In these roles he works to increase training opportunities in environmental education for adults. 👨🏻‍🏫

Tony has a passion for environmental education and enjoys sharing a love of the outdoors with others. In his free time, you may find him hiking, playing board games, or cooking. He lives in Edmond with his wife Maree, his dog Persimmon, and cat Kaylee. 🐶🐱

This month’s Red Dirt Writes takes place on Tuesday, August 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Literati Press in the Paseo. Dr. Ben Myers will lead a free writing workshop on the terza rima poetry form. Bring your notebook & a writing utensil. ✏️

Terza Rima and the Individual Talent ⛓️

This workshop will use the terza rima form to explore the allusive power of received form. In writing their own terza rima poem, participants will discover how to turn limitation into creativity. As Paul Muldoon once said, "Form is a straitjacket like a straitjacket is a straitjacket to Houdini." 🧥

Benjamin Paul Myers is a former Oklahoma Poet Laureate and is the author of four books of poetry and three books of nonfiction. His poems have appeared in Rattle, The Yale Review, Ninth Letter, and 32 Poems. His book of sonnets, Black Sunday, was praised by The Wall Street Journal as one of the "five best books about the dust bowl." 📚

We at Red Dirt Poetry are big champions of editing in the shaping of our poems, and the monthly Red Dirt Edits event has proven to be a great asset to the whole community--and will continue to be, in a new form!

Red Dirt Edits is taking a brief summer hiatus and will return in the fall, but as a moderated, ongoing event on our Discord! This way working together can be an ongoing process and on your own time. More info coming soon when our Discord debut happens. Red Dirt Edits: run by human poets with natural intelligence! 🧠👊
