Ogden Pioneer Days rodeo and celebration, with events planned throughout July, is the biggest and best statehood celebration in Utah. This year, the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo will be inducted into the 2017 ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Ogden's rodeo, which annually draws more than 30,000 people, also has been ranked as one of of the top five large outdoor rodeos in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Each year, Ogden Pioneer Days is celebrated at the historic Ogden Pioneer Stadium, where the rodeo started and where the feeling of the American west still lives. Bring the whole family and join us for five nights of rodeo entertainment under the stars.

The PRCA regular season closed on September 30. For most of the rodeo world, that's when the race to Las Vegas ends. But circuit finals say otherwise!

Every PRCA circuit holds its own championship in October and November. These events carry real weight:

> Top competitors in each circuit qualify regardless of world standings
> Prize money gives athletes a meaningful financial reset before the off-season
> Circuit finals champions earn a berth in the NFR Open in Colorado Springs the following summer
> For younger athletes, it's a proving ground with everything to gain and less pressure to lose
> For veterans, it's a title shot after the national spotlight has moved on

In 1984, when the PRCA board voted on whether to move the NFR from Oklahoma City to Las Vegas, the result was a 5-5 tie. PRCA President Shawn Davis broke it in favor of Vegas. By the third year, the event was selling out all 10 performances. One vote changed the sport forever!

The Whoopie Girls are one of the things that make OPD unlike any other rodeo in the country. The story starts in 1934. Ogden was deep in the Great Depression, and Mayor Harman W. Peery was looking for a way to put the city back on the map.

His answer was Ogden Pioneer Days, built around a professional rodeo. Two years later, Lorene Donaldson became the first Whoopie Girl, as well as the first rodeo queen in the United States.

Her image went on to run in more than 1,400 newspapers. The Whoopie Girl had gone nationwide!

Today's Whoopie Girls are skilled horsewomen who ride each night of the rodeo, serve as OPD ambassadors throughout the community and show up long after the arena lights go dark.

Ladies breakaway roping is an often talked-about event in professional rodeo! And for good reason.

Here are the basics worth knowing:

1️⃣ A thin string and a small colored flag attach the rope to the saddle horn.

2️⃣ The calf gets a measured head start out of the chute before the rider can leave the box.

3️⃣ Leave the box before the barrier releases and it's a 10-second penalty.

4️⃣ When the calf hits the end of the rope, the string snaps and the rope pops free from the saddle horn.

5️⃣ Time stops the moment the flag drops.

6️⃣ The winning runs are often completed in under two seconds.

7️⃣ The event has been sanctioned by the WPRA for decades and has grown steadily on the professional circuit.

Every run is decided in hundredths of a second. T0 come out on top, there's no room for error!
