Marion Cultural Alliance Marion Cultural Alliance (MCA) champions, convenes, and creates opportunities for artists & arts organizations in Ocala, Marion County.

MCA also operates Brick City Center for the Arts, a premier fine arts gallery & rental venue in the heart of downtown. Marion Cultural Alliance (MCA), a nonprofit, 501(c)3 was established in 2001, with its inaugural effort, the Horse Fever public art project. MCA’s mission is to champion, convene, and create opportunities for artists and arts organizations. MCA supports activities relating to the arts, historical and scientific museums, and specific education through grants, advocacy, fundraising, and partnerships. MCA has donated over $1.5 million to the arts and other charitable organizations in Ocala/Marion County and established a Cultural Endowment fund of $900,000. MCA has supported local arts organizations with over $450,000 through its annual Cultural Grant Awards. In 2015, MCA established the Four Friends Grant Fund as a permanent endowment, designed to generate income for small grants to support individual MCA member artists for equipment, training, and supplies. MCA launched this initiative in early January 2019. MCA also operates the Brick City Center for the Arts, a popular art gallery, located in historic downtown Ocala. On the 25th anniversary of September 11, R.J. invites us to consider the poem, the Bruegel painting that inspired it, and the questions they raise about suffering, attention, memory, and our obligations to one another.

What does it mean to remember an event that stopped the world for some, even as the world, impossibly, continued around them?

Join us for this thoughtful public lecture as we reflect on art, memory, and the ways we carry the past with us.

Twenty-five years later, how do we remember?

On Friday, join R.J. Jenkins for a public lecture exploring W. H. Auden’s extraordinary poem, Musée des Beaux Arts, and the Bruegel painting that inspired it.

R.J. was in New York City when the planes struck the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Each year since, he has returned to Auden’s poem, which reflects on the strange and enduring reality that even as a life—or an entire world—is transformed by catastrophe, ordinary life somehow continues all around it.

Together, we will explore what the poem and painting can teach us about suffering, attention, memory, and our obligations to one another.

Please join us this Friday as we consider what it means to remember an event that stopped the world for some, even as the world, impossibly, kept on going.
