Oakland Public Conservatory of Music "Preservation Through Music Education"

05/01/2026

Alicia Keys has spoken plainly about something the music industry rarely puts into numbers. In a recent interview with The Times of London, the 17-time Grammy winner pointed out that women account for just 2% of the entire music business, a figure she finds both shocking and unacceptable, given how much women contribute as producers, engineers, and songwriters. Rather than simply criticising the system, Keys has been working to change it through She Is the Music, the nonprofit she co-founded to create concrete opportunities for women entering the industry. The organisation runs songwriting sessions, mentorship programmes, and educational initiatives, and earlier this year hosted its second Women Sharing the Spotlight event. On top of her advocacy work, Keys confirmed she is in the final stages of a new studio album, her first since Keys in 2021.
