The Bay Area Musical Improv Festival brings together musical improvisers from around the San Francisco bay area and across the country for a weekend of musical improv shows, workshops and jams!

LAST CALL for applications to the 2026 Bay Area Musical Improv Festival!

This coming Monday, June 1st, is the FINAL day to apply to perform at year's festival at the All Out Comedy Theater in Oakland, CA the weekend of October 22 - 25, 2026.

Building on the success of our last two events, this year's festival will feature a mix of shows, workshops and jams over four days, including an opening pizza party and a closing party with live-band improvised karaoke!

There are currently two applications still open for a few more days: One to apply to perform at the festival and one to apply to teach a workshop.

Bay Area Musical Improv is excited to announce we're hosting a summer intensive series with instructors from Los Angeles right here in the Bay Area!

LA to the Bay will feature two 6-hour intensive musical improv workshops taught by the legendary Shulie Cowen and Tara Copeland! Join Shulie in Oakland on Saturday June 20th or Tara in San Francisco on Sunday, July 12th.

Registration for both workshops opens this coming Tuesday at 12:00pm.

A big thank you to everyone who came out this past weekend for our first-ever Weekend of Workshops! It was such a delight to see so many local musical improvisers teaching new and different topics and for some to teach for the first time.

And we were thrilled to cap it off with our annual Jam & Bread event: The community was thriving, the food was overflowing, and the songs were absolutely bopping!

Join us for our annual spring potluck, mixer and jam with live-band improvised karaoke this Sunday in San Francisco!

Jam & Bread is a totally FREE event for any and all Bay Area musical improvisers. Come make new friends from the community, connect with old friends, bring a snack to share, and take part in live-band improvised karaoke! That's right, we'll be drawing song titles from a hat, then making them up with the help of a full band!

The event starts at 5:00pm, with the live-band improvised karaoke starting at 6:00pm.

This event is a potluck (that's the "bread" part of 'Jam and Bread'), so we encourage guests to bring a food item or treat to share.

We are thrilled to announce that applications for the 2026 Bay Area Musical Improv Festival are now OPEN!

We're coming back for a third year to the All Out Comedy Theater in Oakland, CA the weekend of October 22 - 25, 2026 and we’d love for YOU to be a part of it!

Building on the success of our last two events, this year's festival will feature a mix of shows, workshops and jams over four days, including an opening pizza party and a closing party with live-band improvised karaoke!

We are thrilled to announce our lineup for our first-ever Weekend of Workshops, April 18-19 at Endgames Improv in San Francisco!

This weekend will feature eight workshops taught by local musical improvisers--each sharing their unique insights, experiences and skills with a select number of students. And it will culminate Sunday evening with our annual FREE Jam & Bread community event--a potluck and social gathering featuring improvised songs with a live band!

Tickets will go on sale on February 18th at 12:00pm Pacific. Stay tuned for the full workshop descriptions and event listings, coming this Thursday!

We're excited to announce that this spring we'll be hosting our first ever Weekend of Workshops in San Francisco!

This is a weekend dedicated to showcasing and fostering local teachers, offering musical improvisers the chance to learn about unique topics from our own local talent pool!

Applications to teach are now open through January 11th!

Anyone is welcome to apply, regardless of experience-level, however due to space and time limitations, we likely won't be able to accept all applicants.

Have a topic you think you're uniquely suited to teach? Something that local musical improvisers would benefit from? Submit your application!

Join us on Sunday, January 11 in San Francisco for an evening of post-holiday revelry, treats and made up carols.

This is a totally FREE event for any and all musical improvisers and/or musical improv enthusiasts. Come make new friends from the community, connect with old friends, and join us in improvising some never-before-heard (and never-to-be-heard-again) holiday carols!

We'll provide hot drinks (hot cocoa, apple cider and tea) and if you have a favorite holiday treat (perhaps a favorite winter-time cookie or snack or drink) feel free to bring it! And if you aren't able to bring a treat, no worries, come as you are.

That's a wrap on the second-annual Bay Area Musical Improv Festival!

Thank you so much to everyone who took part in this year's festival--you made it such a joyful and inspiring weekend!

Over four days, we hosted over 700 audience members at eight shows, with 25 acts, featuring 117 performers. We also held seven sold-out workshops for 104 students and a workshop for 10 Musical Directors. And we hosted an incredible opening pizza party, a rockin 'closing party with live-band karaoke, a performer jam and a bagel and coffee klatch.

And we're excited to announce that we're coming back again next year! Save the date, because the third-annual Bay Area Musical Improv Festival will be back October 22 - 25, 2026.

We hope to see you there!
