Shoutout to my colleague, Eritrean-American artist Layne Tadesse (LT), on the release of his new song “Simple Man.”
The track is a cover of the classic hit originally recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd, the legendary American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida back in 1964. Not many artists would dare to remake a slow-rock anthem, let alone reimagine it as a reggae track, and actually pull it off this well. LT did exactly that.
What makes this release special is how the song transcends not only genres, but also cultures, perspectives, and lived experiences, while delivering a strong message to all of society. A band made up of rock legends from Jacksonville, Florida, ends up inspiring an Eritrean-American kid who grew up in San Diego, California, and that alone says everything about the power of music. LT truly did this version justice. With his beautiful vocals, LT preserves the soul and message of a song written over 53 years ago, while giving it new life through a different genre. I salute LT for using his talent to ensure this timeless message continues to engage people in new and meaningful ways.
The song also resonates deeply with the community LT comes from, the Eritrean people. From the leadership of the country to the everyday person, many who have achieved great things have done so while remaining humble. Humility is a powerful trait, and no matter how high you rise in life, it’s important to understand and live by it.
“Simple Man” is full of valuable life advice, captured perfectly in these words:
“Be a simple kind of man / Oh, be something you love and understand.”
This is a message that remains just as meaningful, even after rising to celebrity status. What we can all learn from this is that music is truly a universal language. It’s one of the few things that can genuinely bring people together, and songs with strong messages like “Simple Man” will always impact generations for a long time. Excellent work, LT.
