Valley of Light, Horsetail Firefall
An art exhibit inspired by the annual Horsetail Firefall in Yosemite.
February 7 to March1, 2026
Closing Reception – February 28, 3 to 5 pm
Every year in February, when the conditions are just right, a small waterfall plunges from the rim of El Capitan, lighting up with an awe-inspiring glow. Sometimes subtle, sometimes glowing orange like the embers of a campfire, the spray from the fall meanders with the wind. The phenomenon was a well-kept secret for many years, but now draws tourists and photographers from around the world to bear witness, hoping to capture a perfect moment.
The Firefall Past and Present – The original Firefall was an annual event that took place on the other side of Yosemite Valley at Glacier Point. A bonfire was lit and a great pile of embers was prepared. A Caller shouted out “Let the Fire Fall” and the embers were poured over the rim, creating a spectacular cascade for the onlookers below. The glacier point Firefall ended in 1968. Today the name is used to describe the natural event at Horsetail Fall.
Both events are not without controversy.
The show features photography and paintings by regional artists, and a special video installation by Mari W.
“Once a year, nature graces us with one of its many moments of magic. As the sun begins to set, it lights the water for a few minutes as it flows over the rim of El Capitan creating a few ephemeral moments of awe and beauty.
Those who come to watch should remember that Yosemite is a place where life, light and magic live year-round. Plants, animals, mountains... everything is alive. We all become visitor in this ugh sacred place.
As the light dims away, we leave. Our lives move on. But in this Valley of Light, in the home of all that reside here, life continues. The animals and plants continue their journey into spring. I hope this exhibit encourages people to see wonder all around them, and to treat this special place, with all the gifts it has to offer, with respect.” - Mari W.
