After Freshman Camp, my hair started growing back. The beard had been growing for about six months. I thought about trimming it, but I also thought about shaving it off altogether.

Every Fall the pre-seminary students went on a retreat to Grace Camp in DeWitt, Iowa. I decided that while we were there, I would shave off the beard. So, with a little help from Phil Zielinski and Jonathan Mumme, the beard came off.

There was a rumor going around that my skill with languages was tied to the length of my beard (similar to Samson's hair), and so as soon as it was shaved off, someone said, "Quick, conjugate something!"

I remember distinctly stepping off the porch of the cabin and feeling the cool night air under my chin and thinking, "I can't remember the last time I felt that."

When I returned to campus, I had friends who had known me for years who did not recognize me without the beard.

In the Fall of 1999 it was time for Senior Year to start. I was on the Freshman Camp Staff again that year, which helped to welcome new students to college with a weekend at camp.

It was a fun, quirky group, and we decided that right before the Freshmen arrived, that I should buzz the hair off my head. We even had a skit with song about the beard...
"Birkholz' beard's grown quite a bit,
Sometimes things get lost in it..."
and then I would pull different items from the beard.

Unfortunately I could not find a clear pic of the shaved head and long beard, so you'll have to use your imagination a bit.

During the second semester of my Junior year of college, I stopped trimming my beard. There were several reasons for this:

1) I was curious what it would look like.

2) I knew I was going to the seminary in a little over a year, and I knew that I should probably look presentable then, so this was my last chance to let it grow out a bit.

3) (Most importantly) my beard trimmer broke and I was too cheap to buy a new one.

This picture is from the summer of 1999 with my cousin, Heather Changstrom Haniszewski at my Great-Aunt Rosie's farm near Laurel, MT.

The beard was still pretty wispy for the first year or so. Here's a picture from Spring of 1998. Wind Symphony was going on tour in Alaska and we had a long layover in Seattle, so my Uncle John and Aunt Judy, along with Nate and Matt picked me up and took me out for a quick meal.

Beardless is making a comeback, but Bald is still holding a big lead.

The Beginning of the Beard...

I started growing a beard after Christmas break of my Freshman year at Concordia University River Forest. The pic on the left is from Christmas that year ('96), and the pic on the right is from January of '97, when my sister came to visit for the Concordia Invitation Tournament (basketball). If you look really carefully you can see a bit of fuzz on the chin and upper lip.
