Our “The Men Behind MVAAFF” spotlight series continues with John Quackenbush, Lead Projectionist.

Based in Massachusetts, John has been part of the MVAAFF team for several years. In addition to serving as Lead Projectionist for the festival, he works as a Projectionist for Harvard University’s Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies.

His advice to young men entering film and media:
Stay curious, work hard, and be someone people can rely on. Learn as much as you can and say yes to new challenges.

One of his favorite MVAAFF memories comes from his very first year at the festival. He was blown away by the staff, the location, and the caliber of the films. From day one, it was clear that MVAAFF was something special—and it’s a feeling that keeps him coming back year after year. 🎬✨

Our “The Men Behind MVAAFF” spotlight series continues with Segun Oduolowu, Executive Producer and Host.

Based in Los Angeles, Segun has been a part of the MVAAFF family for 2 years, helping bring unforgettable conversations and spotlighting the incredible talent that has come through the festival.

His advice to young men entering film and media:
“Hustle harder. You have devices at your fingertips that allow you to shoot, edit, and post worldwide. Make use of the technology. Your only limit is your imagination.”

One of Segun’s favorite MVAAFF memories was hosting the Directors Brunch honoring the legendary Debbie Allen, a special moment celebrating one of the industry’s most influential creatives.

Based in New York, Bernard has been part of MVAAFF for more than 20 years, helping preserve the people, moments, and stories that make the festival so special. From filmmakers and actors to panels, premieres, and unforgettable behind-the-scenes moments, his lens has captured it all.

His advice to young men entering film and media:
“Master your craft, stay curious, be dependable, and tell authentic stories. Relationships, integrity, and consistency will open more doors than talent alone.”

HIs favorite MVAAFF memories include capturing the powerful moments where filmmakers, artists, and audiences connect through storytelling, celebrating Black excellence and culture year after year. ❤️🎬📸

Our “The Men Behind MVAAFF” spotlight series continues with Darren Brown, Technical Director.

Based out of Detroit and part of the festival for five years, Darren helps bring the technical magic of MVAAFF to life behind the scenes.

His advice to young men entering storytelling and media:
“Create out of passion and know your worth.”

One of his favorite MVAAFF moments was meeting legendary filmmaker Spike Lee and watching one of his films alongside him, an unforgettable experience rooted in culture and storytelling.

Our “The Men Behind MVAAFF” spotlight series continues with Zaire Rance, Operations Assistant.

Based in Aurora, Colorado, Zaire has been part of MVAAFF since 2002, growing up alongside the festival and witnessing its evolution firsthand.

His advice to young men entering film and media:
“Keep creating. Keep brainstorming. Keep writing your ideas down. All it takes is one moment.”

One of his favorite MVAAFF memories comes from the early years, helping set up the festival alongside his sister, Zoe from the red carpet and speakers to chairs and everything needed behind the scenes. For Zaire, MVAAFF has always been rooted in family, creativity, and community.

Based in Doylestown, Pennsylvania and entering his fifth year with the festival, Ben says one of the biggest lessons MVAAFF has taught him is to always be yourself in everything you do.

For Ben, one of the best parts of the festival is reuniting with everyone each year and picking up right where they left off.

Based in Atlanta and part of the festival for five incredible years, Jamahl helps bring the energy, excellence, and unforgettable experiences of MVAAFF to life.

His advice to young Black men entering storytelling and media:
“Stand on business and stand strong in telling our stories with no chaser.”

For Jamahl, some of the most meaningful moments of the festival are seeing Black excellence on full display, especially during the Men’s Luncheon and the Summer White Party.
