Waterford World's Fair July 17-19, 2026
Down Home Agricultural Fair. Mailing Address PO Box 174
No Waterford, Maine 04267 They take place throughout the year and feature local bands.

The fair was initiated in 1850 and named "Tom Greene's Fair" after its founder. Its early exhibits were set on store porches and in the schoolhouse. Farmers raced their horses on the straight stretch of public road and ox pulling competitions were held on the village's main street. Around 1900 the fair established the name "World's Fair" , most likely inspired by the enormous popularity of fairs

in the United States at the time. The Waterford fair celebrated rural culture focusing on farm-work, agriculture, domestic skills and textile fancywork. They also had various strength competitions and a "freak" sideshow. This tiny fair was (and still is) built on and by a devoted local effort. In 1928 the fair changed it's name to "The North Waterford World's Fair" and got it incorporated. At this time the fair moved it's location the the hill above the town and has remained there ever since. Over the years the fairgrounds has gained barns (one large called ol McDonald's barn), a dance hall. a cook shack, two expos, a craft building, two pulling rings one with a grandstand, and more recently new bathrooms, a entertainment stage, a new ice cream shack, a large cattle barn and new cleared parking area behind the big barn. The Saturday night dances have always been a popular local event. we have them at the Harrison VFW in colder weather and at the fairgrounds when it gets warmer. The Waterford fair has always been a magnet for 4H steer clubs, antique tractor collectors and steer/horse breeders.

TRUTH!!!

TRUTH!!!

Passing down a checklist is passing down knowledge.

That's how fairs protect their future.

There's a binder on my desk older than I am.

The handwriting on the early pages isn't mine.

The corners are soft.

There's a coffee ring on page nine that's been there since the eighties.

Someone scribbled "DO NOT forget the extra extension cords" in the margin in red pen, underlined twice.

I suspect Linda. It's always Linda.

That binder has run more fairs than most board members have attended.

Here's the part nobody tells you about agricultural societies.

The most valuable thing in your building isn't the trophies or the grandstand schedule.

It's the institutional memory.

The stuff someone figured out the hard way twenty years ago on a night you weren't there for.

The reason the generator is plugged in over THERE and not over here.

The reason we always bring a second set of zip ties.

The reason we never, ever, let Doug run the pancake breakfast unsupervised.

When that knowledge lives in someone's head, you lose it the second they step down.

When it lives on paper, it survives turnover.

It survives burnout.

It survives the year nobody wants to be chair.

A checklist isn't a piece of paper. It's a legacy in disguise.

The coffee ring stays.

The red pen warnings stay.

Add yours next to them.

Pass it down.

That's the job.

It is Monday, and time to celebrate our next Director!

When Fred Berube moved next to the fairgrounds, he really didn’t stand a chance — it wasn’t long before he became involved and started volunteering. Fred jumped right in and quickly became an important part of the team. Today, he proudly serves on the Maintenance Committee as well as a Director, always willing to help wherever and whenever needed.

During the Fair, Fred can be found doing a little bit of everything. He works hard to keep the fairgrounds looking clean, welcoming, and beautiful for everyone who visits. From making sure trash is picked up and properly contained to helping keep the grounds organized throughout the busy days of the Fair, Fred is constantly on the move.
You may also spot Fred driving a golf cart, transporting people across the grounds, or delivering supplies and items to food booths and vendors. No matter the task, Fred is always ready to step in with a smile and lend a hand.
One responsibility Fred especially enjoys is serving as a judge for the pie contest. Sampling delicious homemade pies may be a tough job, but Fred is always happy to help with this important Fair tradition.
Like so many of our dedicated directors and volunteers, Fred wears many hats. His willingness to help behind the scenes plays a big role in making the Fair run smoothly each year. We are grateful for Fred’s hard work, dedication, and positive attitude, and we are proud to recognize him as one of our Directors.
