We'll prepare your image for print and run it through. *FUN OPTION: Bring your printed fabric image back on October 11th for Janet and Lily's workshop, "Stitching Memories Together"—it may be the perfect excuse to spend an entire day creating an heirloom gift for the holidays! FROM THE COMMUNITY ARCHIVES: In the process of digitizing oral histories recorded in the 1970s and 1980s, we have come across several fun stories. In this oral history by Kendall Rich given 1983, Kendall describes his first meeting with Sister Mary Veronica, the daughter of Elizabeth “Lizzie” McCullough, who became an Episcopalian nun in her 30s. He says, “My very first recollection is when I was about four or five years old, I was out in the field out here picking strawberries, and I was way down in the hay, picking field strawberries, and all of a sudden this thing appeared in front of me, scaring me half to death. It was Sister Mary Veronica, who was in her habit. Her long flowing robe and a big white and black hat, which had looked like wings or thorns or something — scared me half to death. I had never seen her, and I had never seen anybody like her. Well, I went running home. She found out who I was, and she came and told my grandfather what had happened and asked him to go home and get me. And he came down the house, we lived out here on Prescott(?). He came back to the house and got me and brought me up and we sat out here on the porch, Sister Mary Veronica, Mrs. McCullough, Grandfather, and I, we had ice cream cake and made chats, and got all acquainted, and she was afraid that if I would be so scared of her that I could run away that she thought I'd turn against religion and water.” Here is a photo of Kendall (man in center with light colored suit) from our archives, taken at an event for employees of the Hall Farm.

We've found plenty of inspiration from this season's readings and writers and the talent keeps coming with Genevieve and the release of her new novel The Lonely Girl's Vegetable Patch and Miranda with her NY Times Bestseller Fierce Little Thing now in paperback. Hear them read, ask them questions, and secure your books! We hope to see you Tuesday, September 15, 5 - 6:30 PM!

TODAY! The annual North Bennington Village Block Party! NOON - 2 PM. The wet weather may send us into the carriage barn this year, but there's plenty of space to enjoy a potluck, great music by the Grace Fall Band & Friends, hot dogs and hamburgers by the North Bennington Volunteer Fire Department, activities by some of your favorite local orgs, and plenty of neighborly cheer. See you there!

Duo Works is in the carriage barn tomorrow evening! Saturday, September 12, doors open at 6:30 PM. Join us in listening to the compositions and improvisations of David Bindman (saxophone, flute) and Michael Wimberly (percussion), with special guest, dancer Kaolack. This event takes place on Monday, August 31st, 5:00pm-6:30pm, and is part of the Carriage Barn at Park-McCullough House Reading Series. You can find us in the Park-McCullough House Carriage Barn at 1 Park Street, North Bennington, VT!

👾Miciah Bay Gault will read from her newly released novel, The Nobody Code, alongside Ann Dávila Cardinal, who will share excerpts from her forthcoming thriller, Hear the Dead. 👾

About the authors:
💛 Miciah Bay Gault is the author of the novels The Nobody Code and Goodnight Stranger, which was nominated for a Shirley Jackson award and longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s first novel prize. Her fiction and essays have appeared in Tin House, The Sun, Agni, The Southern Review, The Harvard Review, The New York Times Modern Love Column, Poets & Writers, and other places. She teaches in the MFA in Writing program at Vermont College of Fine Arts and directs the Vermont Book Awards at Vermont Humanities. 🌟

💛 Ann Dávila Cardinal is a Puerto Rican, Vermont-based author and educator. Her eight books include the October 2026 punk rock thriller Hear The Dead, magical realist novels The Storyteller’s Death and We Need No Wings, young adult horror novels: Five Midnights, Category Five, Breakup from Hell, and You’ve Awoken Her, and a middle grade biography of Bad Bunny. She has an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, teaches in the University of San Francisco’s MFA in Writing for Young Readers, and is a powerlifter and part time bookseller. 🌟

FROM THE COMMUNITY ARCHIVES: There will be lots of music coming from the veranda this Saturday for “International Play Music on the Porch Day”, 11:30AM to 5:30PM. As you can see here, it’s been a tradition for quite some time (albeit not the same genre of music)! These were taken for the Battle Day celebration in August 1972. Does anybody recognize the now – not – so – young musicians or have any memories of this event? We’d like to add these photos to our community archives!
