Gregg August Ensemble: Crosscurrents and Cross Rhythms, Dialogues on Race, Volume II august

Dialogues on Race, Volume II is a continuing project that originated in 2009 after Gregg received a joint commission from the Jerome Foundation and the Jazz Gallery in New York City. What began as a commission for a full length concert work, Dialogues on Race was recorded and released in 2020, receiving a GRAMMY nomination for Best Large Jazz Ensemble album. Crosscurrents and Cross Rhythms, Dialogues on Race, Volume II will be the second installment of the series.

The idea behind the work is to create musical dialogue or conversations which discuss race relations in the United States. Through the melodies, arrangements and improvisations, a full discourse takes place.

Recorded at Studio 9! As part of a 2022 FreshGrass Commission, we turned to Sierra Hull to produce brand new music in the form of a bluegrass concerto.

The concerto debuted live at the 2022 FreshGrass | North Adams festival at MASS MoCA and included the composition of now live fan-favorite tune, “Movement 3.”

In fall 2025, the band returned to FreshGrass for the first time since the premiere and recorded a live in-studio version at the festival’s Studio 9, which Hull plans to release on her YouTube channel. “I think it’s interesting to hear how The Movements have evolved since those earliest days spent playing them,” she wrote. The recording, she noted, is “truly a capture of the earliest days of this group of musicians learning to make music together.”
