We introduce New Music Workshop composer Rory Bricca with “6 QUESTIONS.”

Is there a particular composer that inspires you? Would you share why?

“Viet Cuong is a major inspiration to me. I admire his playfulness and sense of humor in combining found sounds or extended techniques with more traditional/tonal influences. Also, having grown up playing in wind ensembles throughout middle school, high school, and college, I appreciate how he has brought out the band world’s sometimes underappreciated enthusiasm for original, contemporary textures.”

Norfolk has an outstanding group of young professional, composers, instrumentalists, and singers studying and performing at the Festival this summer. We're going to begin introducing you to a few of them with “6 QUESTIONS.”

We start with cellist Emil Olejnik. Emil is returning for a second summer and will be performing in Benjamin Britten's Phantasy for String Quintet on Friday, July 10.

Norfolk: When not playing music, what are you up to?

Emil: Cooking for friends and family has always been my favourite way of spending time outside of a practice room or a concert hall. I love experimenting with different cuisines and finding ways to surprise my own taste buds. In many ways I feel like cooking and music making are similar activities. Both bring people together and encourage generosity and spontaneity.

Congratulations to violinist-violist Miranda Werner (Norfolk ’23, ’24) on winning a section viola position with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra! A gratuate of the Yale School of Music (YSM), she studied in the vioin studio of Soovin Kim and the viola studio of Ettore Causa.

“During my first two years as a violinist, Professor Kim challenged me to think deeply about my artistic choices, and as a result I was able to develop a musical personality that felt both meaningful and genuine,” says Miranda. “Later, Professor Causa taught me to embrace the complex sound world of the viola, and encouraged me to believe in my goals as an artist. The strength of the support system of teachers, colleagues, and friends I was able to create here at YSM has allowed me to adopt a calm, decidedly joyful musical mindset, invaluable to my growth as a performer and artist.”
