Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup

Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup Sailing's premiere corinthian big-boat international championship. In 2021, Southern Yacht Club because the second repeat winner in the event's history.

The Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup is a biennial competition between yacht clubs, with strict eligibility rules ensuring that each team is comprised exclusively of amateur sailors. Since the event was first run in 2009, it has attracted top amateur sailors from 51 of the worldโ€™s most prestigious yacht clubs from 22 countries. After five editions in the Swan 42 class, the 2023 event wil

l be the third sailed in the IC37, designed by Mark Mills. The strict one-design nature of this purpose-built class, combined with the fact that each boat is owned and maintained by the New York Yacht Club, will ensure a level playing field not seen in any other amateur big-boat sailing competition. The New York Yacht Club won the inaugural event in 2009, with the Royal Canadian Yacht Club winning in 2011 and 2013, England's Royal Thames Yacht Club winning in 2015 and Southern Yacht Club, from New Orleans, winning in 2017. In 2019, the regatta was sailed for the first time in the New York Yacht Clubโ€™s fleet of IC37 yachts, and Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, from Australia, became the first Southern Hemisphere club to win the trophy.

Each edition of the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup is special, but this year will surely go down in event history. The camaraderie and kinship among competitors, the inclusion of younger Club members and blending of generations in each team, and especially the tight competition, which culminated in a final race so exciting (and stressful) that we watched from between our fingers, have all left a mark on the event that will last forever.

Congratulations to all sailors on a hard-fought regatta, and to our podium finishers:
1. San Diego Yacht Club
2. Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club
3. Royal Vancouver Yacht Club
4. Corinthian Yacht Club
5. Royal Cork Yacht Club

In addition to their second-place finish, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club also won the Resolute Trophy for being the highest placing Club from outside of North America.

Finally, congratulations to the Royal Thames Yacht Club team, who were voted the winner of the Corinthian Spirit Award by their fellow competitors and the Race Authority. After the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club team suffered rig damage on the first day of this yearโ€™s event, William Edwards and the Royal Thames Yacht Club team quickly offered their personal IC37 to the RVYC so they could continue to compete.

Thank you to all of the yacht clubs and sailors who participated this year, the New York Yacht Club staff and volunteers who put so much effort and care into hosting the event, and to the families and supporters who watched and cheered from home (or your Clubโ€™s bar). This event would not be possible or special without all of you.

San Diego Yacht Club Rips Victory from the Jaws of Defeat at Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup: โ€œThat thought had to be running through the minds of the nine sailors on the San Diego Yacht Club teamโ€”and their fan base watching the live broadcast back at homeโ€”as they found themselves in the blender at the top of the first beat of the deciding race of the 2025 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup. In 2019, the teamโ€™s first bid to win this prestigious Corinthian competition came undone when they missed the layline for the second windward mark in Race 10. Was it about to happen again?

TracTrac's race tracker had San Diego in seventh as they approached the mark. The team rounded in 17th, well behind Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, the two teams that were mathematically alive for the championship.

Over the course of the next three legs, the virtual lead in the regatta pinballed between the three clubs. Royal Hong Kong made its move with a jibe set at the first mark. Royal Vancouver was more methodical, grinding down the boats in front of them. As the fleet approached the second leeward mark, with just one beat remaining in the regatta, Royal Hong Kong was fourth, Royal Vancouver was seventh and San Diego sat 13th. The race for the championship was a virtual 3-way tie.

Congratulations to our 2025 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup: the San Diego Yacht Club! After a nerve-wracking final race, the impressive young team from San Diego California made history in more ways than one:
- Helmsperson Jake La Dow and Tactician Adam Roberts led the team to the Clubโ€™s second Invitational Cup victory, a feat so challenging that only two other clubs have achieved it.
- Theyโ€™re the first team in Invitational Cup history to lead the regatta and fly the yellow spinnaker every single day and across the finish line to win the event.
- Rick Merriman is now a FIVE-time winner of the Invitational Cup, and having only sailed in five he has a 100% batting average.
- San Diego Yacht Club is the only club in history to finish on the podium in every single edition of the event they've competed in.

The San Diego Yacht Club Team:
Jake La Dow, Helmsperson
Adam Roberts, Tactician
David Dempsey
Max Hutcheson
Nicholas Martin
Rick Merriman
Andy Reiter
Kara Voss
Lucy Wallace

Tonight, in addition to hoisting the Invitational Cup, the team will also be the first to be jacketed in the newly unveiled Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup Champions Blazer.

Yesterday, Royal Vancouver Yacht Club dominated the race course and charged up the overall standings to second place, well within range to seize this yearโ€™s Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup title. But first, theyโ€™ll have to go through San Diego Yacht Club to get it, and keep Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club at bay in the process. A tall order by any measure.

With one race left in the series, and no safe margin for San Diego Yacht Club to lean on, tomorrow promises to be tense, exciting, dramatic, and an altogether exhilarating final day.

Our live broadcast of racing continues today with the 12th and final race of the 2025 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup. First warning for Race 12 is 1300 EDT, and we will be going live at 1250 EDT to bring you the action.

A Van-Tastic Day of Racing Lifts Canadian Club to Second in Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup: โ€œIn preparation for the 2025 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club acquired an IC37 in the hope that better familiarity with the regattaโ€™s platform would lift the team into podium contention after a 12th in 2021 and a ninth in 2023. However, without another one within 2,000 miles, their training in the boat was limited to solo efforts on English Bay, which, as any one-design yachtsman will tell you, is far from ideal; you never lose a one-boat regatta.

With a 5-1-1 on the course today and a vault into second place in the regatta, clearly the solo training was nonetheless quite effective. Tomorrow, the Canadian team will start the final race of the regatta with a top-4 position locked in and first place within reach.

Despite a tough day on the water, a first followed by a 16th and a ninth, San Diego Yacht Club remains in first and will fly the leaderโ€™s yellow spinnaker on the final day. But the lead that started the day at 17 points is now effectively 7 points. The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club remains in contention, 9 points out of first. Behind the top three is a gaggle of five boats, separated by 12 points, fighting for the final two spots on the five-deep podium. The forecast is for light winds in the morning, so the race committee has delayed the start of the final race until 1 p.m. The race area will be determined in the morning.โ€

Our live broadcast of racing continues tomorrow with the twelfth and final race of the 2025 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup. First warning for Race 12 is 1300 EDT, and we will be going live at 1250 EDT to bring you the action.

Eastern Plays the Rabbit on Day 3 of Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup: โ€œEastern Yacht Club calls it the Reverse Rabbit. When Plan Aโ€”usually starting close to the pinโ€”doesnโ€™t go to, well, plan, the Reverse Rabbit is the exit strategy. Itโ€™s far from easy and success has to be measured against the alternative. But for Race 8 of the 2025 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, it was the only viable option for tactician Bill Lynn and his EYC teammates (above, labeled "EYC/15"). They pulled it off, finished sixth in the race and won the day.

Tied on points with Eastern today was the regattaโ€™s steadiest team, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC). With the exception of a 20th in Race 5, the eight-time Invitational Cup competitor has finished all its races between third and fifth. RHKYC is currently second, one point ahead of Royal Canadian Yacht Club, but 17 points behind San Diego Yacht Club, which also had a strong day and extended its advantage over the rest of the fleet.

The heartfelt moment of the regatta so far came in the first race of Day 3 when Itchenor SC earned a wire-to-wire win. The invite for this year came late, giving team principal Barry Sampson less than two months to put together a team.โ€

It was a day of threes: Today was the third day of racing at the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, held in a third race area, with a third set of completely different conditions. And, for the third time, we saw a new group of three teams claim victories in todayโ€™s racing.

In Race 7, the first of the day, Itchenor SC led the race wire-to-wire, all the way across the finish line to win their first race since 2015. Most impressively, their win comes after receiving a last-minute invitation to this yearโ€™s event, only having a few months to prepare, unlike other teams who have campaigned for over a year.

Corinthian Yacht Club, an early podium favorite, finally broke away from their mid-fleet finishing streak and took the gun in Race 8.

Ultimately, it was Eastern Yacht Club who won the day, posting a second and a sixth in each of the dayโ€™s races, respectively.

Another early day off the water means the teams are treated to another beautiful afternoon on the lawn under the hospitality tent, enjoying the shore-side, post-racing festivities. Tonight, they will gather for the famed Lobster night โ€“ our mid-week relief from the weight of competition and the one thing the sailors seem to look forward to as much as racing.
