“The Make-Up Room” party ran on Fridays at Webster Hall in NYC for about three years, from winter 1992 to winter 1994 (before moving uptown to Club EXPO on 1/27/1995). The “Queen” party ran for about two years during this period. Both parties were hosted by Peter A. and Reign Voltaire at the hosting venue, Webster Hall. These parties were short-lived events in an otherwise brief era that occurred
from about the end of the 1980s to, some would argue, Michael Alig’s arrest in 1996. The “club kid” scene primarily culminated with The Limelight’s “Disco 2000” parties (1991 to 1994), and other such subsidiary events that happened during the same time. Occurred in an age before cell phones and all the other abilities to instantly communicate that are now available, “showing up” was paramount. You had to be there to be seen, and you had to be there to see. As such, the era is bittersweet—sweet in that much of what happened there mostly exists in our minds. Bitter in that photographic and video evidence of the era is all to slight. We welcome your contributions and submissions. The editors,
Mike Jeknavorian & Young Richard
Where are they now? Young Richard, the primary DJ for both parties, currently lives in Japan, where he DJs and produces music. Reign Voltaire, one of the two promoters, lives in the Bronx. Peter A., one of the two promoters, unfortunately passed away in December 2007. Miss Understood, one of the main bartenders, still lives and performs in the NYC area. Walt Paper, who worked the velvet ropes, still lives and performs in the NYC area. Chris Couture, who worked the velvet ropes, is missing in action. Patrick "Egg Girl," who worked the velvet ropes, is alive and well and living in NYC. Amanda Lepore, who worked the VIP room, is now an international star.
