Thank you to everyone who came out and raced with us yesterday at our 8th Annual Rockaway Beach Triathlon/Duathlon on 9/13/26! ππββοΈπ΄ββοΈπββοΈ
We were very happy to see all of you, even though we didnβt quite get the perfect race weather we ordered. π
More than a few dozen of you emailed us ahead of race day regarding the weather forecast and the possibility of thunderstorms throughout the morning. We were hoping the conditions would improve, but unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans.
In fact, thunderstorms were forecasted around 8:00 AM, right when our race would have been well underway. It takes about 1 hour to complete the swim for all athletes. We simply could not take the risk of having to stop the swim in the middle of the race and pull swimmers out of the water at the first sign of lightning and thunder.
Per NYC Parks rules and regulations for permitted events, events must pause or be canceled when there is thunder and lightning. We could not jeopardize our permit standing with NYC Parks or, more importantly, put the safety of all 300+ of you at risk on race day. We also had to take into serious consideration the recommendations of our lifeguard team.
After carefully evaluating the conditions, we made the difficult decision to cancel the swim and replace it with a 1.5-mile run for the triathlon and duathlon participants so that we could safely start the race on time.
Thank you again for racing with us, for your patience, and for trusting NYTRI to make the right call when Mother Nature doesnβt cooperate.
Hopefully, next year weβll finally get the perfect race-day weather we ordered! βοΈπ
