Trek 2024

Trek 2024 Join us as Shepherd Colver, the youngest T1D to cycle across the entire US, and his father James go on thier next adventure. Thank you for your support :)

In May 2024 they plan to start in Miami, Florida and spend the summer cycling North to Maine. When Shepherd Colver was just 6 years old he approached his father and shared his dream of cycling to New York to see the Statue of Liberty. His father, a former cross country cyclist, agreed to train him. In 2019 when Shepherd was just 7 years old they left from Anacortes Washington and cycled together a

ll the way to eastern Montana. Sadly after cycling over 1000 miles across 2 mountain ranges Shepherd learned he had Type 1 Diabetes and had to suspend the tour. In 2021 Shepherd and his dad took the train back to were they left off and continued riding east. Together they completed this journey in August 2021. Once completed Shepherd became the youngest Type 1 Diabetic cyclist to cycle across the United States. The tour took a total of 18.5 weeks to complete. Together Shepherd and his dad cycled approximately 3470 miles total. This year Shepherd plans to ride the Pacific Coast trail from Canada to Mexico with his Mother, Liz Colver. Adventure is a Family Value :)

Sorry for not posting sooner....... Unfortunately Dad got COVID and needed to rest. Dad's feeling good again, but Shep and I decided when we reached Battery Park in New York that this felt like a good stopping point for the summer.

This summer Shep and I were able to cycle together another 1100 miles and we're happy we got to mark 5 more states off our bucket list. :) We were lucky to experience more fantastic sunsets, great food, and along the way Shep and even got to make new friends and inspire more people to take up this sport. Shep also wanted me to mention we saved more than a few turtles too :)

We're not sure what the future holds and if we'll want to do another tour again but we hope that all of you will be inspired to ride and spend quality time with loved ones. Its true that time really does go by quicker than we realize. Personally it's hard for me to believe 6 years has past since Shep shared with me his dream to cycle cross country with his dad. So much has happened and we really had the time of our lives experiencing this together.

I remember when I was Shepherds age my grandfather, Glen would tell me how you can't take your possessions with you when you eventually pass. During the thousands of miles Shep and I traveled together I sometimes thought about that statement. I've come to realize that while that may be true, I believe we do get to take our memories with us. So let us invest our limited time in the things that truly matter. Let us develop experiences and memories together that we can enjoy during this life and take with us to the next ❤ī¸

James and Shep.........

On our way up to New York we enjoyed a scenic bicycle trail that paralleled a river with lots of turtles and beavers.

Shep was enjoying his music on his Bluetooth speaker and this time he was enjoying a rap song about living in the struggle. Of course Dad joked and reminded him he grew up in a suburban neighborhood and wasn't gonna fully understand the challenges the artist was singing about đŸ¤ŖđŸ¤ŖđŸ¤Ŗ. Still a good song though......

Stopping for a train to go by. Many of the bike trails along the east coast were formally train routes that were subsequently converted to a nice level path But some of them still have active train routes nearby 🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃

On our ride through Philly we saw a park with at least 50 hammocks set up for people to enjoy. It was a perfect 80 degrees outside and a cool breeze was coming in from the shore. Shep and I agreed more cities should implement this idea..........

A few weeks ago Shep and I watched the 80s classic "Some Kind of Wonderful". There's a cool scene when the main characters go out on a date a borrow a 60s Rolls Royce limousine. Really good movie btw and has a great ending :)

When Shep and I were going through Aberdeen Maryland we saw 4 Rolls Royce limousines of the same year abandoned on the side of the road. I'm sure they were someones pride and joy 40 years ago. The silver model was the exact same looking car from the movie. 😎😎😎😎😎

On our ride north to Baltimore Shep told me all about his friend who has a Nike shoes collection. It may seem a little superficial but I enjoy these small talks while traveling on the trail. Sadly they don't seem to happen that often when youre back at home. Everything gets busy and there's more distractions, but out here on our bikes everything slows back down and life feels more meaningful 🤗🤗🤗🤗
