To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Papunya Tula Artists, the Grey will host a lecture by Dr. Fred R. Myers (Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, NYU) that discusses some of the social and political achievements of this important cooperative of Aboriginal Australian artists. Since 1973 Myers has served as one of Papunya Tula’s most prominent international advocates, authoring multiple books and edited volumes on Pintupi culture including Irriṯitja Kuwarri Tjungu’s catalogue. His talk will emphasize the artists’ role in sustaining and extending the Pintupi project of self-determination and explore some of the social spaces created by their paintings.

On March 6, 5pm, @ 25 Waverly Place Kriser Theater we hope you'll join us for a BOOK LAUNCH and CONVERSATION In celebration of two outstanding books featuring the groundbreaking work of Indigenous film and media makers in the Americas, and transnationally.
RSVP REQUIRED: https://wp.nyu.edu/cmch/friday-march-6-5-pm-frames-of-resistance-the-cinemas-of-abya-yala-by-amalia-cordova-2025-oxford-university-press/

BOOK LAUNCH: FRAMES OF RESISTANCE: The Cinemas of Abya Yala by Amalia Córdova Hidalgo (2025, Oxford University Press), followed by a conversation with Robert Stam, author of the 2024 Bloomsbury publication, INDIGENEITY AND THE DECOLONIZING GAZE: Transnational Imaginaries, Media Aesthetics, And Social Thought.

While contemporary Latin American cinema is recognized worldwide, FRAMES OF RESISTANCE: The Cinemas of Abya Yala highlights the lesser known cinema of Indigenous communities in the region, a territorial expanse known as Abya Yala. INDIGENEITY AND THE DECOLONIZING GAZE: Transnational Imaginaries, Media Aesthetics, And Social Thought spans national and transnational media, orchestrating a dialogue between the western mediated gaze, and the indigenous gaze itself, especially as incarnated in the burgeoning movement of “indigenous media”.

Join us for our screening of Remembering Yayayi (2014, 60 min, Dirs: Pip Deveson, Ian Dunlop, Fred Myers). THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 5-7PM @ 25 Waverly Place, Kriser Theater. RSVP REQUIRED:
https://wp.nyu.edu/cmch/thursday-february-26-5-7pm-remembering-yayayi-2014-60-min-dirs-pip-deveson-ian-dunlop-fred-myers/

Screening followed by discussion with filmmaker, anthropologist Fred Myers (NYU Anthropology, Emeritus) and Jane Anderson (NYU Anthropology/Museum Studies).

In 1974 filmmaker Ian Dunlop visited Yayayi, a remote community in Central Australia where Pintupi people had recently moved, leaving the larger government settlement of Papunya. He never made a film with the material he shot and Yayayi has long since been abandoned. In 2006 anthropologist Fred Myers – who is in the Yayayi footage as a young PhD student —showed the footage to Pintupi now living on their own land at Kintore and Kiwirrkura, in particular Marlene Nampitjinpa, now a respected leader and painter, who appears in the footage as a lively young girl. With pleasure and sadness, she watches this remarkable archival film of her family as they had been living thirty years earlier, remembering Yayayi and this pivotal moment in Pintupi history. Photo: Marlene Nampitjinpa, by Pip Deverson.

Co-sponsors: Grey Art Museum, Anthropology, Cinema Studies.
