Happy Juneteenth. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’šโค๏ธ Today is a day to celebrate freedom, honor resilience, and recognize the ongoing work required to build truly equitable communities.

At the World Water Film Festival, we want to spotlight an incredible story of leadership and community care from Alabamaโ€™s Black Belt. For decades, residents in Lowndes County have faced a severe sanitation crisis, with failing wastewater systems leaving families exposed to raw sewage.

But where systems failed, community stepped up. The award-winning film Flushing Injustice tells the story of Sherry Bradley, Perman Hardy, and the Blackbelt Unincorporated Wastewater Program (BBUWP ). These visionary women of color have dedicated themselves to bringing affordable, sustainable sewage treatment systems to families in need.

Recently, federal funding for this life-saving work was abruptly cut, with officials labeling the provision of basic indoor plumbing as a "DEI initiative." But as the leaders of BBUWP know: the soil doesn't discriminate, and neither does their mission. They are fighting to protect the health, dignity, and quality of life for everyone in their region.

This Juneteenth, let's celebrate the Black women who are on the frontlines of environmental justice. Their work proves that community health is a human right.

At the World Water Film Festival, we believe storytelling has the power to connect people to a mission, movement, or message in ways that facts and data alone cannot. Through film and video, communities can see themselves in the challenges facing water systems around the world and become part of the conversation about solutions.

Healthy wetlands support healthy water and thriving communities.

Wetlands filter water, reduce flooding, store carbon, and provide habitat for countless species. As these vital ecosystems disappear, the effects reach far beyond their boundaries, shaping water security, climate stability, and livelihoods worldwide.

Films bring these stories into focus, sharing both the challenges and the solutions while inspiring action to protect wetlands and the life they sustain.
