The US and Israel launched a major joint military strike on Iran on February 28, 2026 (today, beginning in the morning Tehran time / early hours EST).
This is the first time the US and Israel have conducted coordinated, large-scale strikes together on Iranian soil. Israel called its part “Operation Roaring Lion” (or similar), while the US dubbed it “Operation Epic Fury.” It involves hundreds of Israeli jets and US precision strikes from air, sea, and land (including drones), hitting targets across cities like Tehran, Isfahan, and others.
The strikes followed the collapse of indirect US-Iran nuclear talks (mediated by Oman in Geneva). Iran had made some concessions on uranium stockpiles, but the IAEA discovered hidden highly enriched uranium, and the latest round ended without a breakthrough on February 26–27, 2026. President Trump had warned that “all options” remained on the table.
Both countries say Iran continued or restarted its nuclear program despite earlier damage. Trump stated the goal is to ensure “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.” Netanyahu called it an “existential threat.”
Targets included Revolutionary Guard command facilities, air defenses, missile/drone launch sites, military airfields, and naval assets. Trump said the US would “raze” the missile industry and “annihilate” Iran’s navy.
Trump explicitly urges Iranians to “seize control of your destiny” and “take over your government” once the strikes end, calling it “probably your only chance for generations.” He offered immunity to IRGC members who surrender. Netanyahu echoed this, saying the operation would help “the brave Iranian people to take their destiny into their own hands.”
