The Rock & Rouge

The Rock & Rouge Rock & Rouge Women's Music & Food Festival & beyond. Empowering women movement! How did The Rock & Rouge first come to fruition?

Its inception does, in fact, go as far back as 2012 after lead singer, Lani Ramos of Big Pearl & the Fugitives of Funk, became frustrated by the majority rule of men anywhere from stealing gigs on Frenchmen Street to women being outnumbered in bookings for local festivals. One night hanging out at Mimi’s Bar room with a group of musician comrades in 2012 Ramos met a festival producer from Mississ

ippi and they began to talk about the festival circuit as they drank. A few hours later, Ramos pitched The Tomboy Music Festival, an all-rock & roll female fronted music festival. There was limited space for female-fronted rock bands in New Orleans in general. It was missing from the music scene altogether. Well, the promoter thought it was a good idea but went back to Mississippi never to speak of it with Ramos again. Fast forward 5 years later and the unthinkable happens. The movement hits and then the Women’s March of New Orleans was born and still Ramos sees a festival with 25 bands with only one woman fronted rock band booked. Seeing this moment of truth for women’s rights and the formation of the March brewing, Ramos contacted an organizer of the March asking if they had a music program and to the surprise of Ramos, The organizers did not. So Ramos emailed them over her mp3 of “See (Just What We’re Fighting for)”. The organizers loved it and added her into the March’s program. The New Orleans Women’s March turned out an attendance of 10,000 people, the biggest single march in New Orleans history, and that’s a big feet in the nation’s #1 party town. Ramos was in company with activists, organizers and the future mayor of New Orleans afterwhich she played her song. During this moment in front of City Hall at the women’s march Ramos had the epiphany. She wanted to produce the Tomboy Festival, but how? Following the March came Mardi Gras and on Lundi Gras day while gigging at Bamboula’s on Frenchmen at her weekly gig, Ramos met another festival producer, this time from Alabama and pitched him the idea of an all-women music festival and calling it the Tomboy Festival. He liked it and called for a first meeting. After the first meeting it was determined that the Tomboy festival may not be the best name and was told to think of something better. So one afternoon driving around the Street of New Orleans, The new name struck Ramos like a bolt of electricity, The Rock & Rouge Women’s Music Festival! In 2018, the Inaugural Rock & Rouge Women’s Music & Food Festival & beyond was born.

People may laugh at our post, but the truth is our organization needs help. We took on serious financial hits from past weather issues, the Taylor Swift Eras Tour annihilating us, and the No Kings March Founder holding his march during Women’s History Month…yeah that’s right…what up with dat?

So, if you, or someone you know would love to support and empower an organization who has been empowering women & girls for the past 8 years, please, will you help our cause? Will you help to keep us alive? Asking for this help is not easy😵‍💫.
Giving to our organization means you will be instrumental in saving the Rock & Rouge & supporting our mission that gives space to a place for women & girls to excel in music, food, S.T.E.A.M. education and speakerships. These are our four cornerstones. We’ve added to our community programming: health and beauty, arts and crafts, a men’s lounge experience, and inclusive to supporting LGBTQ. We, also, work with Mardi Gras Indian Queens, such as our Ambassador, Laurita Dollis of the Wild Magnolias tribe, who’s been with us since 2018.
When we have money to give we give small tuitions to S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) organizations for girls to attend these summer camps, and we give to women in need of emergency rent or emergency prescription drug payments. But this year we have no money to give. We’re sitting on empty. 🥲

We would love to have another festival next year and have devised an incredible plan. We would like to fill you in on that plan if you would like to be a donor and a supporter of our mission and our movement to keep women centric programming alive and kicking for our New Orleans women and girls community & beyond.

Thank you 🙏🏼 for reading our post. We hope to have your support!

May the spirit be with you, take care ✨

Sincerely,

Lani Ramos

Yup….👍 Rock & Rouge is a great supporter of feminism, and what this Feminist News’ statement is making…

Can we take a moment to appreciate that an AMERICAN Pope is out here on the international stage showing more compassion, backbone, and basic human decency than the actual American government?

Pope Leo XIV has been unafraid to push back on the Trump administration's cruelty — calling out the dehumanization of migrants, the abandonment of the poor, and the moral bankruptcy of policies that hurt the most vulnerable among us.

It is genuinely refreshing — almost jarring — to see an American in a position of global power speak with empathy, clarity, and moral courage. No cruelty for clout. No performative toughness. Just a man saying: these people matter. All of them.

Trump and JD Vance love to wrap themselves in Christian language while gutting every program that actually helps people. The Pope isn't having it — and honestly? Neither are we.

This is what moral leadership looks like.
