It is with esteemed pleasure that we announce Governor Mikie Sherrill will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the 260th Anniversary Commencement for Rutgers University – New Brunswick and Rutgers Health on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at SHI Stadium.

Her career has been defined by service to her country and New Jersey, having previously represented New Jersey's 11th Congressional District in Washington, D.C.

After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1994 – the first class of women eligible for combat roles on ships and aircraft – she spent almost 10 years on active duty in the United States Navy.

Following her service in the Navy, Gov. Sherrill attended and graduated from law school at Georgetown University. She worked in private practice before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey, first working as an Outreach and Reentry Coordinator and later as an Assistant U.S. Attorney.

We look forward to honoring Governor Sherrill at the ceremony next month.

We are pleased to announce that Rutgers Alumnus Christopher Markus, Emmy Award-winning screenwriter who co-wrote six films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will be delivering the Commencement Address to the Class of 2026 at the 260th anniversary Commencement of Rutgers University – New Brunswick and Rutgers Health on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

Markus is best known for his work on box office blockbusters Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), which he co-wrote with writing partner Stephen McFeely.

These films have been regarded as a must-see cultural phenomenon and a shared global experience. Markus had a great responsibility in bringing the 10-year saga to an end, and the films received praise from critics and the dedicated fan base worldwide. Markus has also co-written other notable works such as The Chronicles of Narnia (1-3) and Pain & Gain.

Now it’s time to pack SHI Stadium as we did in the theaters in 2019 for the Avengers: Endgame premiere!
