Gooood morning Natchez,

🎺 160 years. Still marching. Still remembering.

Yesterday, the Memorial Day Parade rolled right through the Natchez Theater District just like it has for many years - making its way up to the National Cemetery. Folks came out in the rain and kept on walking.

That’s our neighbor Van Hawkins - Resident in Chief - behind the lens. Look close and you’ll catch people stopping to take their picture with his replica Civil War cannon.

And here’s the thing that keeps stopping us in our tracks: the U.S. Colored Troops - men who fought for their freedom - they came home and put down roots right here, in this neighborhood. This ground we walk every day. The National Cemetery up the road has held them since 1866.

Yesterday, marked the unveiling of a historical marker on Canal Street to honor this tradition. One of the longest-running Memorial Day observances in the whole country, and it comes right down our street. Thanks to the Mayor, the City of Natchez, documentary filmmaker James Theres, historian Roscoe Barnes III and Glenn Powers, Deputy Under Secretary for National Cemetery Operations.

To everyone who crossed that bridge and came through the Theater District - thank you. Y’all carry something real.

Gooood morning Natchez,

Here is our dear neighbor & artist Ciara DuBose sharing her thoughts on the Suzanne Herbert award-winning documentary “Natchez,” along with an update on the progress of the 15-foot sculpture of a Queen that she is currently creating here in the Natchez Theater District.

Her message is clear and simple: representation matters - now more than ever. So don’t stop shining your light. There is enough room for everyone to shine in Natchez, especially in our part of town!
