HypeGirl | Food for Thought

There was a time when being asked felt like the opportunity.

They asked me to serve.
They invited me to join.
They want me on the committee.
They offered me the project.
They asked me to speak.

And honestly? It feels good to be asked.

It means someone sees something in us. Our experience. Our ability. Our ideas. Our willingness to show up.

So we say yes.

And for a while, saying yes to things can open doors we never knew existed.

But somewhere along the way, growth starts asking a different question.

Not:

“Can I do this?”

But:

“Is this mine to do?”

Because eventually there will be more things you could do than things you actually have the time, energy or desire to do well.

And maybe that’s one of the quieter signs of growth.

You stop measuring an opportunity simply by whether it’s a good one.

You start measuring it by whether it belongs in the life you’re actually trying to build.

A great opportunity can still be the wrong opportunity.

An invitation can be flattering without requiring a yes.

And being capable of something doesn’t automatically make you responsible for doing it.

Sometimes growth looks like raising your hand.

And sometimes it looks like knowing when not to.

Just because you can do it doesn’t mean it’s yours to do. 💛

There’s a difference between a mentor and a sponsor - and it’s worth knowing.

We hear a lot about the importance of finding mentors.

And for good reason.

A great mentor can offer perspective, share experience, help you navigate a decision and tell you the things they wish someone had told them earlier.

But there’s another kind of relationship we don’t talk about nearly as much:

Sponsorship.

A sponsor doesn’t just give you advice.

They advocate for you.

They recommend you for the opportunity. Make the introduction. Suggest your name for the board seat, project, speaking engagement or leadership role.

Sometimes they simply say:

“You need to meet her.”

And sponsorship isn’t limited to the corporate world.

It happens in business. In nonprofits. In our communities. In volunteer organizations. In rooms where decisions are being made and opportunities are taking shape.

A mentor can help you prepare for the room.

A sponsor says your name when you’re not in it.

And sometimes, that one distinction can change the trajectory of a career, a business or an opportunity.

Worth knowing. 💛

Why does making - and keeping - friends sometimes feel harder as we get older?

When we were younger, friendship had infrastructure built around it.

School. Dorms. First jobs. Neighborhoods. Teams. Kids’ activities. Hours of unstructured time when you could simply… hang out.

Then adulthood gets very scheduled.

Careers. Partners. Children. Aging parents. Businesses. Moves. Responsibilities.

And suddenly seeing someone you genuinely love can require three calendars and a group text that started six weeks ago. 😂

Somewhere in there, it can be easy to interpret less time together as less friendship.

But maybe adult friendship simply looks different.

Maybe some friendships can survive long stretches of quiet and pick right back up.

Maybe some are deeply important for one season and then naturally change.

Maybe the woman you see twice a year can still know you better than someone you see twice a week.

And maybe one of the best things about friendship is this:

We’re never finished making friends.

Especially in a place like Myrtle Beach, where so many people are arriving, starting new chapters and building new lives, there are opportunities for new friendships all around us.

There are women we haven’t met yet who may someday become part of our favorite stories.

I love that thought.

The rooms change. The seasons change.

Some people stay. Some people go. And new people keep finding their way into our lives.

We never really outgrow the need to be known - or the possibility of finding people who will know us. 💛

Hey, HypeGirls. We did a thing. 🩷

Actually, we made a table.
And we saved you a seat.

Meet The Table by HypeGirl.

Once a month, 40 women. One hour. And a completely different way to connect.

Because here’s the thing. We can collect business cards all day long. We can follow each other on Facebook. We can sit in rooms full of women and still walk out not really knowing anybody.

We want more than that.

So at The Table, we’re ditching the elevator pitches and the rehearsed introductions.

You’ll roll the dice and sit with women you may not know.

We’ll ask questions that go a little deeper than “So, what do you do?”

We’ll put our collective brains behind one woman who could use them.

And before we leave, we’re going to ask you to do something that actually matters for another woman in the room.

We’ll laugh. We’ll listen. We’ll share. We’ll pray. We’ll eat. And yes, we’ll probably get a little loud.

Because we think networking can be better.

Real conversations. New connections. Women moving women forward.

And we’re kicking it off around the breakfast tables at Winna’s Kitchen.

🩷 THE FIRST TABLE
Tuesday, October 27
9:00 to 10:00 AM
Winna’s Kitchen | Myrtle Beach
$15 | Just 40 women

Come hungry. Winna’s full menu, fancy coffees and pastries will be available for purchase while we’re together.

You don’t need to know anyone.

Bring your business cards. Bring your ideas. Bring what you know. And come ready to see what happens when 40 women pull up a chair.

There’s always a seat for you at our table. 🩷

THANK YOU, IT’S TRUE.

A few years ago, HypeGirl keynote speaker Cynthia Barnes gave us four words that stuck:

“Thank you, it’s true.”

Someone tells you you’re talented.

Thank you, it’s true.

You’re a great leader.

Thank you, it’s true.

You did an incredible job.

Thank you, it’s true.

It sounds almost uncomfortable, doesn’t it? 😂

Because so many of us have gotten really good at doing the opposite.

“Oh, it was nothing.”

“I just got lucky.”

“I had a lot of help.”

“Anybody could have done it.”

We can be incredibly generous when we’re talking about another woman’s gifts and strangely uncomfortable acknowledging our own.

But humility doesn’t require us to make ourselves smaller.

You can be grateful for the people who helped you and acknowledge that you worked hard.

You can have more to learn and be really good at what you do.

You can recognize someone else’s gifts without diminishing your own.

Maybe sometimes the most honest response to a compliment really is simply:

“Thank you. It’s true.” 💛

Cynthia, years later, we’re still carrying this one with us.

Worth Knowing: The Surprising Power of People You Barely Know

The person who changes your life might not be one of your closest friends.

She might be someone you worked with five years ago.

The woman you met once at an event.

A former client.

A friend of a friend.

Someone you occasionally interact with online but have never actually spent much time with.

There’s a name for these relationships: weak ties.

Sociologist Mark Granovetter introduced the idea more than 50 years ago, and the basic premise is fascinating.

The people closest to us often know many of the same people we know. They hear similar information. They move in overlapping circles.

But the people on the edges of our lives?

They have entirely different circles.

And those looser connections can become bridges to information, ideas, people and opportunities we might never encounter otherwise.

It’s one of the reasons you can have a conversation with someone you haven’t seen in three years and suddenly hear:

“Wait. I know someone you need to meet.”

And just like that, two circles that weren’t connected before… are.

Maybe relationships don’t have to be deep to be meaningful.

Some people are part of our inner circle.

Others expand it.

Both matter. 💛

THE HYPEX MIC IS OPEN. 🎤🩷

For the first time, HypeGirl is opening a formal Call for Speakers for the HypeX Stage at our 7th Annual International Women’s Day event on March 8, 2027.

And this year, there are just FOUR spots on that stage.

We’re looking for women who can tell a story, connect with a room and leave an audience with something that stays with them long after they leave.

Our 2027 theme is WHY NOT YOU?

To apply, you’ll submit an application along with a 5-minute recorded presentation responding to “WHY NOT YOU?” Prior speaking experience is required, but we aren’t looking for perfect speakers. We’re looking for compelling ones.

Applications will be independently reviewed by our HypeX Selection Committee, and 8 women will advance to Stage Two, held in person in Myrtle Beach on December 1. From those eight, four women will be selected to take the HypeX Stage on March 8.

No public voting.
No pay-to-play.
No sponsorship shortcuts.
No side doors.

Because when we hand someone the HypeX mic, we’re trusting her with our room.

Applications are officially OPEN and close Sunday, October 18 at 11:59 PM ET.

Think you belong on that stage?

WHY NOT YOU? 🎤🩷

We’re starting to build the room for 2027. 👀💛

And one of our favorite parts of that room is about to get even bigger.

HypeX is coming back.

New voices. New stories. New ideas. And this year, one of those voices could be YOURS.

More soon. 😉🎤

Before there were hundreds of women in the room… there were two women with an idea. 💛

We didn’t have it all figured out.
We didn’t know exactly what HypeGirl would become.
We definitely didn’t have some perfect roadmap. 😂

We just started.

And that has become one of the biggest lessons behind HypeGirl:

You can waste a LOT of time waiting until you feel ready.

Ready enough. Experienced enough. Confident enough. Funded enough. Certain enough.

Sometimes you just have to take the first step and figure out step two when you get there.

Around here, we call that DO IT UGLY. 💛

Because imperfect action will take you places that perfect plans never will.

So tell us…

What are you waiting to feel “ready” for? 👇
