Here’s your schedule for Uncle Dave Macon Days: A Roots Rendezvous, September 11–13 at Hop Springs in Murfreesboro!

From old-time music and the National Old-Time Banjo Competition to bluegrass, gospel, clogging, live bands and plenty of pickin’, we’ve got a full weekend celebrating the music and traditions that Uncle Dave helped carry into American music history.

From seven banjo pickers to a National Championship

The first Uncle Dave Macon Banjo Picking Contest welcomed only seven contestants in 1978. The winners received plaques purchased through community donations, and the results were tallied by flashlight on the courthouse square.

The following year brought a parade, additional musical categories, prize money, more volunteers, and late-night jam sessions on the courthouse lawn. By 1981, the celebration had grown enough to become Uncle Dave Macon Days.
What began as a small hometown tribute developed into a nationally recognized celebration of traditional music and dance.

In 2026, the National Old-Time Banjo Championship returns, continuing the very tradition that launched the festival nearly five decades ago.
Come compete—or gather close and hear today’s musicians carry Uncle Dave’s distinctive old-time banjo tradition into another generation.
