The man who inspired it all.

Long before there was an Uncle Dave Macon Days festival, there was Uncle Dave Macon—a banjo player, entertainer, storyteller, and one of the very first stars of the Grand Ole Opry. His music and showmanship helped shape the traditions we continue to celebrate today.

Family recollections tell that Murfreesboro photographer Leo Ferrell convinced Uncle Dave to pose for this portrait without his banjo, giving us one of the most memorable images of the man behind the music.

Nearly 70 years after his passing, Uncle Dave's legacy continues to bring musicians, dancers, and audiences together through the traditions he loved.

Friday night at Uncle Dave Macon Days kicks off with a full evening of live music—and we're excited to welcome The Howlin' Brothers to the stage.

Blending old-time string band music, roots blues, and Americana, they've built a reputation as one of Nashville's most energetic live acts.

They'll join the MTSU String Band, Cripple Creek Cloggers, and Joey Fletcher Band for an unforgettable opening night of music and community.

Have you seen The Howlin' Brothers before?

A piece of Uncle Dave Macon Days history 🎻

This photo was taken on the courthouse square during the early years of Uncle Dave Macon Days. Pictured is Grand Ole Opry legend Roy Acuff being interviewed by local broadcaster Ron Scott, with festival founder Jesse Messick standing just behind them.

Roy Acuff served as Grand Marshal of the Motorless Parade and special guest at the festival in 1980.

We’re grateful to Ron Scott for sharing this memory and helping preserve a small piece of the story that made Uncle Dave Macon Days so special.

Do you have photos or memories from the early years of the festival? We’d love to see them ❤️
