The man who inspired it all.
Long before there was an Uncle Dave Macon Days festival, there was Uncle Dave Macon—a banjo player, entertainer, storyteller, and one of the very first stars of the Grand Ole Opry. His music and showmanship helped shape the traditions we continue to celebrate today.
Family recollections tell that Murfreesboro photographer Leo Ferrell convinced Uncle Dave to pose for this portrait without his banjo, giving us one of the most memorable images of the man behind the music.
Nearly 70 years after his passing, Uncle Dave's legacy continues to bring musicians, dancers, and audiences together through the traditions he loved.
What's your favorite Uncle Dave Macon song or memory?
