You’re getting an automated reply from the Murfreesboro Parks Dept. With WGNS Radio I organized the parade for many years before I turned it over to them. They are doing a great job but I’m not sure they are getting the questions through this page. You can call Rachel Singer at (615) 642-3723 and I’m sure she can help you.

Thank you for the brave participants in Murfreesboro’s annual parade. The weather was overcast, misty and about 35 degrees. Super cold, in fact too cold for the high school bands but almost everyone else checked in. It was fun to see the many ways people found to go with the theme “a Christmas Story”. Our judges had a hard time picking the winners and you can go to parade sponsor WGNSRadio.com to see pictures and a complete list of winners.
On a personal note Angie Walker was a volunteer for many years and finally the Coordinator of the many sponsors and helpers who made the parade happen. Angie was our daughter-in-law, married to our son Scott Walker, President of WGNS Radio. She was killed in the tornado in the early morning of Nov. 6.
We wanted the parade to honor her life and were so touched by her friends and family who walked in the parade holding a banner with her picture. We saw many entries with signs “In Memory of Angie Walker” and our families, ours and hers are blessed by the many prayers for Scott and their son and daughter, our grandchildren. We thank you all for being part of this years parade, in memory of Angie Heydel Walker.

WGNS - Since 1947: We focus on Murfreesboro news, Smyrna news, LaVergne news, Rutherford County news and Sports daily.

2018 Murfreesboro Christmas Parade Honors the
Memory of Angela (Angie) Heydel Walker

The 2018 Parade this year honors Angie Walker who passed away during the November 6 Tornado in Rutherford County. Angie was the Coordinator of the Annual Murfreesboro Christmas Parade which this year takes place on December 9 at 2:00. She organized the parade for more than 17 years, always greeting people with a smile and a hug if you needed it. Angie reminded people that this was a Christmas Parade honoring the real reason for the season and would never be reduced to a politically correct “holiday parade”.
Her life touched many in Rutherford County through her commitment to her church, her family and this community.
She was a member of New Vision Baptist Church. Angie Walker was a University of Memphis graduate and graduated from MTSU with her Masters. She served as an Adjunct Psychology Professor at MTSU. Angie Walker is survived by her husband, Scott Walker, President of WGNS Radio, children, Reed Severy Walker and Olivia Love Walker.

We often have questions about lining up our parade. The people who are in the parade involve about one hundred dancers, close to 40 floats, numerous vehicles, cheerleaders, and at least 90 marchers, 30 horses and of course Santa. What these people don’t see are the 5 high school bands who enter the parade lineup from another parking lot along with dignitaries and sponsors. The fire engines, ambulances, police cars and motorcycles start the parade from another street. All in all the parade has a about 1,000 people including all the volunteers who choreograph the whole thing. A lot of entries bring their floats and vehicles to the main parking lot and then leave to have breakfast or go somewhere warm. They all have to be together and decorated by a certain time before the roads close or they will miss the lineup on Alumni Drive.
Cars are only judged if they have really put some effort into their entry. I don’t think your van will be judged.
For more information please read the rules.
I’ll see you on the second Sunday in December.

With over 122 entries the WGNS/Murfreesboro Christmas Parade is a huge event with a lot of dedicated volunteers who say the parade is the start of their Christmas and wouldn't miss it for the world! Here is some of what they are dealing with.
Answers to questions like what is my parade number?
You don't have a number. Your position in the parade depends on the time you check in. Before you can be lined up you have to have your entry totally decorated and have your people there.
Why do we have to be there so early?
I know the wait seems long but we have a very large parade and the logistics are daunting. From that one parking lot alone last year we will be lined up the following:
57 floats
41 walking entries
15 vehicle entries
7 mixed entries
and Santa!
From another location we have 5 high school bands and about 10 horses plus a number of dignitaries. From another location we have about 25 emergency vehicles.
It's a lot of work but a lot of fun and as always we will be free of rain, partly sunny and sunny.
