Mullica Hill, NJ. Largest shipping point east of the Mississippi for asparagus and fruit.

A child born in Mullica Hill around 1870 would have watched the entire era come and go.

In their earliest years, they would have seen asparagus leave town the way it had for generations: by horse and wagon, on dirt roads to wherever the next leg of transport waited. Then in 1879, the Reading Railroad arrived. A station went up in the center of town, and within a few years it transformed everything.

By the time they were adults, Mullica Hill had become something extraordinary. Gloucester County was producing more asparagus than any other county in America. Crews worked the station every cutting day, loading crates into boxcars bound for Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. The postcard below said it plainly: this was the largest shipping point for asparagus and fruit east of the Mississippi River.

Now in their fifties, they watched an airplane take off from a local farm in May of 1922 with 800 pounds of asparagus aboard, bound for Boston. The flight made national headlines because it was a first, and their neighbors talked about it for years. But it was a single news story in a town that was shipping thousands of pounds a day by rail.

Then, in their later years, the trains began to slow. Trucking companies opened, and the freight that had been the station's business for half a century moved to the highways. The boxcars stopped coming, and the platform emptied. By the time their grandchildren were grown, the era they had watched build was already gone.

This is the postcard that survived it.
