Gulch Countdown

Gulch Countdown The Gulch Countdown is a simple 2.18-mile loop in the forests of Japanese Gulch in Mukilteo, WA. Last person standing wins.

This timed race has a twist: The first loop has a 32-minute cut-off; the time cut-off gets progressively shorter with each loop.

Read on for results, gratitude, and next year’s race date! 🌲🦉🏃

It’s been one week since the Countdown and we are so proud of everyone that showed up and gave it their all! We heard from numerous runners that they ran farther than ever before and set other personal bests - congratulations to all!

Full results are now available on UltraSignup and on our website. We’re excited to add some new names to our winners’ trophies! Congratulations to our Last Person Standing, Jace Hinesly, with 13 completed laps (28.34 miles), and our Last Woman Standing, Avery Gottesman completed 10 laps (21.8 miles)! Photos from the day are available on Google Photos, link in our bio.

Thank you to the Braddock family for making the Countdown possible and for supplying our runners with food, cold drinks, and amazing hospitality. A huge thank you to the returning sponsors who support our race each year: Adam Braddock Real Estate, and McClain Insurance.
 
We are so grateful for our volunteers who helped with course marking, timing, maintaining the aid station and keeping runners on course. Andy, Nick, Aja, Maia, Paul, and Melissa  - We could not have done it without you! We’re also grateful to have fabulous cookie medals made by our friend Kelsey, and gorgeous lei crowns for our winners made by Anita. 

We loved spending race day with you and we hope you’ll be back next year. We picked the next race date: Saturday, June 13, 2026. Keep your eyes peeled for registration information in the new year!

Only three more sleeps until the Countdown! Supplies are being assembled, cookie medals are going in the oven, and we’re dusting off our trusty start/finish arch and the DNF chair.

We are keeping registration open through midnight Friday and there will day-of registration Saturday morning too, so grab a friend and come enjoy some laps in the Gulch! If you’re already signed up, please check your email for more day-of details.

Race day weather is looking excellent, though a bit toasty: mostly sunny with some afternoon clouds and a high of 82 😎🌞. A little different than this drizzly day back in 2022, pictured 😁.

2024 runners that chose to roll over their event entry back in October should check their emails for more information. We owe a few of you email responses and will get back to you soon 🙂.

Lastly, we’ve heard that the Countdown is scheduled the same day as the Run A Muk event, as well as other trail races across the region. We also realize that five weeks is a short turnaround time to prepare for a race. Though the event overlap and short notice are unfortunate, this is the best date we could find that will work for the whole planning team. We will do our best to make this edition of the Countdown as fun and unique as ever, and we hope you’ll join us next month! If you won’t be able to make it out, then we hope you have a fantastic summer out on the trails. 🏃‍♀️🌿

Well, last weekend didn’t go according to plan! We had to cancel the Countdown due to high winds that brought trees down onto the course. We hope you all stayed safe wherever you chose to spend your Saturday. Photos are from course sweeping Sunday, a much calmer and sunnier day 🌞🍂.

We enjoyed chatting with the runners that were already on their way to the race start last weekend; there was so much enthusiasm for the event, and we know it would have been an inspiring and joyful day. The trail running community is simply the best! Three intrepid runners went to Bridle Trails in Kirkland, where the winds were not as severe, and ran their own version of the Countdown. Very cool to see them continue the spirit of the event despite the cancellation.

Looking ahead, we want to get the Countdown back on the calendar, but we won’t be able to reschedule immediately. Runners, check your emails for refund/credit options.

Lastly, we have some thanks to give: Thank you to all of our volunteers - we know the day would have gone so well with your help, and hope to see you next time! Thank you to the runners that helped clear trail and pull course flagging, it made our job sweeping the course Sunday much easier. Thank you to the Braddocks for opening up their home to this event for the fifth year in a row, and dishing up BBQ chicken sandwiches and hot beverages for the runners that still showed up. Thank you to the Pembrokes for their guidance in planning this event - we couldn’t have gotten this far without you!

RACE CANCELED - we will be in touch with more information soon, but we had to cancel to keep everyone safe. If you’re almost to the race start, we have cookie medals and hot beverages. Not what we had hoped for, but a necessary decision.

🛑Update - race is canceled! 🛑
Good morning! We just sent an email letting runners know that due to wind, we are delaying race start by one hour. The new start time is 9:30am with a 9:15am race brief. We will keep everyone informed if things change.
