While we are always engaged and active, Boonton Rainbow Pride has never made a public post regarding any local elections.
But after the nonpartisan Boonton Board of Education “Meet the Candidates Night” last night, we have to speak out.
Transgender and gender nonconforming people need actively affirming spaces. The NJ Health and Physical Education Standards provide a blueprint of curriculum that can create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Children need our guidance and assurance that learning lasts a lifetime. Of the three candidates present last night, Elaine Doherty and Jonathan Weininger demonstrated they understand their role in upholding and respecting the rights of the students, even if it does not align with their personal beliefs. Candidate Matthew Mondino began the evening with a narrow and transphobic platform as his motivation for running and provided little content during the discussion on other relevant school board responsibilities. Ignorance has no place on our school board or in our town.
We urge Candidate Mondino to learn the facts. “A 2020 peer-reviewed study by The Trevor Project’s researchers, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that transgender and nonbinary youth who experienced bathroom discrimination had more than 1.5 times the odds of attempting su***de in the past year compared to those who did not experience bathroom discrimination.” Further, “The Trevor Project’s 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health found that more than half (53%) of transgender and nonbinary youth seriously considered su***de in the past year, and nearly 1 in 5 attempted su***de. 71% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported that they have experienced discrimination based on their gender identity, and those who have reported significantly higher rates of attempting su***de in the past year compared to those who have not. Further, 91% of transgender and nonbinary youth said that they have worried about transgender people being denied access to the bathroom due to state or local laws.”
