A few years ago a post went viral from a sales director bragging that he instructed his team to always wear a button shirt and blazer when traveling. People really liked this idea.
But I couldn't figure out who he was trying to impress?
Their Dad? Sure, because they're dressed like Fine Young Men
Their Boss? Yes because they're demonstrating dedication to the role
Their Teachers? Yes because they're dressed the way Successful Professionals dressed
The one group I couldn't comprehend being impressed is their clients or prospects (the reason you're in business)
People buy from, and prefer doing business with people they relate to
So how were they trying to relate? Discomfort? Lack of personality? Inability to relax?
I've been running business to business conferences in conservative industries since 2006, and the best relationships come from being real. One of the reasons I went ahead and created Catastrophicon is because everyone has a favorite movie, book, or band, and the most successful people I know enjoy nothing more than unwinding and enjoying that stuff. Every engaged, excited conversation I've had during a conference cocktail hour has eventually drifted towards leisure - as the feeling moves towards unguarded comfort - and that is exactly how business relationships start.
So while I'm going to continue to run B2B and investor focused conferences (stay tuned), I'll be adding something FUN to the slate on July 15 in Purchase NY.
