We are so thankful for the
volunteers that help us put on our School and Home Life programs! Each day it takes 2
- “1893 teachers” to teach the school lessons and 8 - “1893 homesteaders” to run the “chore” stations. Our volunteers are hard working and dedicated to providing a special experience for the students!

In 1893, rope making was an essential skill for farms, and we are fortunate to have a rope making machine at our schoolhouse, inspired by Sweden's rope walk process, where children not only learn to craft ropes but also experience the joy of jumping rope!

Another important “chore” at the schoolhouse is developing an appreciation for corn on the farm. Students discover the joys of shelling and grinding corn and then take home a small bag of corn meal to feed birds or chickens. They also learn to repurpose the cob to create a charming corn cob doll. The dolls are dressed up in fabric generously donated by Lora Lee, Amy Foster and Cindy Schwierske.

In the 1890s, braiding was a highly valued skill that both men and women used. Students received instruction in braiding with jute, cloth, and yarn, and they practiced using all three techniques. The students were especially fond of using a braiding wheel, which was provided to each child to take home.

Domestic life was a significant part of a child's daily schedule in 1893, entailing multiple chores before and after school. Our program focuses on four distinct chores, one of which is darning. Students learn to mend socks and are introduced to two different stitches for sewing on leather.

The wait is finally over, and our Spring field trips are in full swing, fostering a sense of curiosity and excitement in our young minds. Pecatonica Area School District 4th graders were the first to embark on this adventure. As we are preparing for over 300 students that attend our Spring School Days Program we are looking for some help. We are asking for donations of gingham and calico fabric for our students to use to make corn cob dolls. If you have some fabric to spare and would like to donate it to help our program please call Cathy at (608) 437- 4413.

This apartnment building could be comming soon on Main Street around the corner from the Schoolhouse changing the historic character of the entire Main Street National Historic Register District. Voice your opinion at the public hearing Wednesday, October 22, 7 pm at the Public Safety Building, and/or write an email to the village administrator asking for your thoughts to be shared with the plan commission and village board.
