Orange Audubon’s 60-Day Challenge — in honor of our 60th anniversary as a chapter — is winding down! 🌿🕊️

We’re so close to our goal to match our generous donor's $108,000, and your support can help us cross the finish line. Every contribution brings us one step closer to beginning construction this summer on our new Nature & Special Events Center — a space for conservation, education, and community.

Can you help us make it happen? Donate here: https://orangeaudubonfl.org/new-oas-nature-center

Brian Miller photographed the quintessential NORTH SHORE BIRDING FESTIVAL scene -- Northern Harrier over bur-marigolds. Apopka artist Delia Miller captured this in her design for our 2025 festival T-shirts. Some in M, L and XL are still available and for sale with shipping at this link. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F044EA9A92CA3FF2-61305112-2025 #/

Male Snail Kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis) flying with a turtle in his talon over water at the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area near Lisbon, Florida on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

I attended the Emeralda Marsh Photo Trip recently as part of the Orange Audubon Society Annual 2025 North Shore Birding Festival. If you live or visit Central Florida during December and love birding or bird photography, you should check back next year. More information in the shared link. This photo trip was lead by two local photographers with years of experience in finding and photographing birds in the Emerald Marsh Conservation Area near Lisbon, Florida.

I have had little luck in photographing a male Snail Kite in the marsh but, with a dozen people in the group, someone found one eating a meal in one of the thickets near the main road into the marsh. I photographed him until he launched into the sky. He stayed low and flew right in front of us within 20 feet. In looking at the photos in my Nikon Z9s screen, we all could see he was carrying a small turtle in his talon. When snails are scare, Snail Kites will vary their diet to small reptiles and amphibians.
