In case you missed it, earlier today at the Monongalia County Commission meeting State Senators Chris Rose and Mike Oliverio presented a check earmarked for the fair from the Local Economic Development Assistance Fund!
We couldn't be more thankful for this support and all the support we've received over the years! Our fair has always been a community effort. Many people assume we're funded primarily through government support. That simply isn't the case. Our new fairgrounds are being built through the generosity of private donors, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners who believe in our vision.
This is a particularly meaningful time for the Fair. We are making history as we build and operate our own fairgrounds. For the past two years, the Fair has not received support from the Monongalia County Commission, despite being a county fair. We understand that there are many demands on the county resources, and we respect the responsibility that comes with making those decisions. We do, however, respectfully encourage the Monongalia County Commission to revisit their position.
The fair is not simply a week of rides and entertainment. It is is agriculture, youth development, education, local business, families, traditions, and an important part of the identity of Monongalia County. It would be a disservice to not mention the fair's local economic impact. For the past 3 years, we've had visitors from at least 5 different states travel to Monongalia County to experience our fair and all the rest Mon county has to offer.
As we take this historic step with our own fairgrounds, we hope the County Commission will consider taking that step with us. We thank Senators Chris Rose, Mike Oliverio, Joey Garcia, and Charles Clements for their support of the Monongalia County Fair!
