Best day of spring! Getting the orchids off the rack and out to their summer spots!! Much to my surprise, several are already blooming!

Probably my most prized Cattleya Orchid! This monster is about explode with color! The plant itself weighs about 40 lbs in the pot and spans close to 3 feet across. It currently has 8 sheaths of developing buds inside. The hope is these all open around the same time displaying around 25 hand sized white, glittery blooms with purple and yellow throats. The big Cattleya blooms usually last only a couple of weeks at peak color before fading, so if they open up sequentially, this Orchid will be in a continuous bloom for a couple of months. To top all of that, the blooms put off a very sweet fragrance! An amazing orchid for sure!

It’s been a crazy summer! Very wet into very dry patterns. We absolutely cooked in July, then the weather turned going into August. Very pleasant temperatures moved in and persisted. August started very wet and ended on the dry side. September, so far, has been beautiful. Not only are we loving these conditions, so are a lot of our orchids! Annuals and perennials included! Especially loving the cool mornings and mild dry afternoons are the Vanda and Cattleya Orchids. I have so many in spike, sheath, or already blooming! I’m really hoping this weather holds well into October as this place is going to become an orchid utopia with blooming orchids all over the property!! More pics to come!

One of my Nobile Dendrobiums took a turn for the worse. As it sensed its own decline, it went frantic with clones. Today I separated and potted all those clones. These clones will be an exact replica of the original. I had 1 plant, now I have 11. Gimme ALL the plants!!

Another morning round of rain. I can’t get much done on the lawns but I can take some time for the orchids. I just received a new batch of the re-classed papilionanda vanda orchid, formerly known as a terete vanda. These are sun loving orchids that, once acclimated, can take full sun and will continuously bloom the entire summer! Another perk to these amazing orchids, they can potted in cypress mulch. Most of my resident papilionanadas are blooming or in spike. These new arrivals will be available next spring. For now, I’ll pot them, hang them, and harden them for life outside the greenhouse. I included a few of my other orchids that are currently blooming, including a super cool Cattleya with gnarly fringed edges and multicolored.

I spent most the day rounding up all the orchids and getting sheltered in the garage ahead of hurricane Helene.

Some of my August bloomers. Lots of Cats in sheath and almost all my tetrets in bud. Lots of pics to come!

The late summer heat and rain has my vanda and vanda likes in a blooming frenzy! 1st 2 pics are a Rhynochostylis Orchid that I brought back from the Orchid Festival back in May. The 2nd 2 pics are a Vanda Mimi Palmer from that same show. This Vanda is blooming for the second time this summer and smells as good as it looks! The last 3 pics are a Tetrete Vanda that is about 4 years old, it’s in double spike and setting up to be a specimen standout for the remainder of the summer.

Most of my Cattleya Orchids have buds in sheath and should start blooming around the beginning of September. LOTS more pics to come!!

It’s been a quiet year for me this year as my JRX Outdoors duties have kept me extremely busy. Here are few of my current bloomers including my first Cattleya bloom of the season.

There has been lot of behind the scenes work as I discovered the minerals in my well water combined with the fertilizer I’ve been using has been having a negative effect on my orchids. I discovered lots of root burn happening and began investigating why. My remedy, following my spring repotting of most my orchids, was to reduce the amount of fertilizer and switch to rain and r/o water. I’m already seeing big results! Be ware of the water you’re using on your plants.
