Senior Team Member Spotlight - Mike Hall
Mike Hall started his 40-year career with the company on December 27, 1984 when it was Rockingham Coop. His first job at the plant was in a small Breast Debone department with only seven or eight employees. The department was later moved to Broadway, VA. After working in debone he worked in the Cut up department for a short time until the roof fell in the Cut up area. He volunteered to help to repair the roof and since then he has been officially a Maintenance employee. Mike said he likes working in the Maintenance department, it keeps him busy performing a variety of tasks and does not get repetitive during the day.
I asked Mike what has changed since he started working for the company and he said almost everything is different now compared to then. The size of the plant is much bigger, the number of birds we process has increased a lot since about 120 per minute when he started. However, the work that Maintenance does is basically the same as when he started in the department, which is repairing and replacing equipment. Just the equipment changes now and then.
When Mike and I talked about his supervisors and managers over the years, he said he got along with all of them. He did mention he liked working with June Weese, Bill Liller, Ronnie Sherman and his current supervisor Mark Miller.
Mike and I talked about a very memorable event that sticks in many people minds, the flood of 1985. He was working in Maintenance at the time and came in to work to help clean up the plant. He remembers seeing several cars spread out in the field behind the plant that the flood swept away from other places.
What does Mike do when he isn’t repairing the equipment at the plant? He likes to hunt and fish, and spend time with his family, which includes four grandkids.
I asked Mike what the future holds for him and he said retirement is not too far off. When he does retire, he wants to take a break for the first year to just relax and unwind. He wants to spend more time with the family and grandkids. He knows that they will be excited to do a lot more fishing with him!
Thank you Mike for your dedication, hard work and loyalty to our Company.
We Appreciate You!

Help us congratulate Tim Cullers for working with our company for 41 years!

SENIOR TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT-- TIM CULLERS – HOUSING MANAGER
Tim Cullers started his 41-year career with the company on September 18, 1983 with Rockingham Coop. He started working in the plant on night shift in the Whole Bird Packing department. From there he went to the Icehouse, then to Shipping, and then drove a truck for local and over the road deliveries for KFC. Tim started his management career in evening shift Shipping, and he was the first Lead in the department when evening shift was established because the orders became too much for day and night shift to keep up with. He was also the first Lead in the Freezer when that department was established. He then was promoted to Shipping/Freezer Supervisor, and later Assistant Plant Manager. He decided to try out the live side of the business, was Live Haul Manager, and later promoted to Live Production Manager, which he held for several years. Tim is currently working as the Housing Manager and helps with other assignments that are needed.
When talking to Tim about changes since he started working for the company he remembered some things about the plant. There were about 135,000 birds produced daily and now we have the capability of producing 450,000 birds daily. The labor force has changed a lot, used to be all local people where everyone knew each other. In 2nd Processing, he remembers only one cut up department, whole birds were sent to Broadway to cut up and tray pack. Giblets were packaged and stuffed in the whole birds. There was no freezer, just the cooler.
I asked Tim about his supervisors and he said he learned a lot from many of them. The ones he remembers are Steve Weaver, Duffy McKenzie, Grover See, Blaine (Satch) Wratchford, Scott Varner and Peyton Umstot.
Tim and I talked about the most memorable event he has since he started working and he said the flood of 1985 is unforgettable. He helped after the water receded, helping removing chicken from the coolers and loading them in trailers. The next two weeks was spent cleaning up, hosing down, pulling trailers, hauling water. Dr. Ghalib had just started in USDA; he was with us for several years. Another memorable event Tim mentioned was the new plant expansion. He remembers that the first couple of weeks didn’t go very well, and the employees would jokingly say, “It will be better in the new plant”.
When Tim is not working, he likes to spend his time with family. He hunts, takes care of his sister’s property since she has passed, and takes care of his own. He likes to spend time with his grandchildren, attend family functions and Sunday dinners.
What does the future hold for Tim? He said his future is all in God’s hands, whatever he leads him to do, because he is a miracle after recovering from Covid. Tim said he believes God still has some things for him to do here on earth.
Thank you Tim for your dedication, hard work and loyalty to our Company. We Appreciate You!

Pilgrim’s - Moorefield

The Moorefield fresh facility is located on Main Street, in the heart of Moorefield, West Virginia, with the live operation facilities located in the Industrial Park off Route 220 South. The first poultry plant, Rockingham Poultry Marketing Cooperative, was opened in 1944, with 79 employees processing 3,000 birds. In 1988, Rockingham Poultry, Inc. merged with Wampler-Longacre, Inc., to become WLR Foods, Inc. In 2001, the 1,500 employees at the complex joined Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation and in 2009, Moorefield joined the JBS USA family. The fresh plant currently processes approximately 450,000 birds per day in two processing shifts and one sanitation shift. Products produced are whole birds (marinated and non-marinated), fast food cuts (marinated and non-marinated), boneless breast, parts and giblets. Major customers include KFC, Boston Market, Sysco, Popeyes, Safeway, Wal-Mart, Denny’s, Food Lion and more.

Moorefield hosts the annual WV Poultry Festival and Convention in July and the annual Heritage Weekend event in September.
